When Carol walked into what was now Lily's room, she found Lily sitting on the floor amidst an array of scattered items. Half the room was cluttered with disarray—shoes, clothes, and other belongings strewn about—while a half-full garbage bag lay abandoned nearby.
"What are you doing?" Carol asked, her voice filled with concern as she approached Lily.
Lily let out a small, self-deprecating laugh, clearly lost in her thoughts. "There was, um, this one time. I was 19, dating this guy. He wasn't a great person, but I didn't realize that until much later. When I found out he'd cheated on me, I was furious—seeing red, basically. So, I gathered all his stuff, tossed it into the backyard, and set it on fire. I was so stupid though," she continued, laughing through her tears. "Did it right on the grass. Damn near set the whole yard on fire."
Carol chuckled softly, settling down next to Lily on the floor. "You planning on setting Daryl's things on fire?" she asked, her tone light but understanding.
Lily sighed deeply, nudging the garbage bag with her foot. "I should. I was going to. But I guess I'm not as mad as I thought I was. I mean, it's his brother. Of course he'd stay with him."
"Don't be too angry at him. Men like Merle have a way of getting under your skin. They make you think you deserve the abuse," Carol said, her voice tinged with sympathy.
Lily turned to Carol, puzzled by her choice of words. She had seen the scars on Daryl's back and heard the stories, but Daryl had never shared much about his brother. She wondered if Carol meant something deeper than just physical abuse.
"I wish I knew if he was okay," Lily said, her voice faltering as a tear slid down her cheek. "I mean, he's the one who left, and I'm worried about him. It'd be easier if I was just angry."
"Easier than what?" Carol asked, gently.
"To forget him," Lily admitted, her voice cracking as another tear fell. "Because I have to forget him, right?"
Carol looked at Lily, her own tears beginning to fall as she pulled Lily into a comforting hug. She didn't have the right words to offer, but her presence provided the solace Lily needed. As they both cried together, the weight of their shared pain seemed to lift, if only slightly.

"Hey. You busy?" Lily asked, her voice soft as she approached Sutton, who was lying on her bunk. Sutton shook her head, and Lily climbed up to sit beside her. "Wanna talk about it?"
Sutton shook her head in response.
"You mad at him?" Lily asked, her voice gentle but probing.
Sutton nodded, her face a mix of sadness and frustration.
"Do you... do you really see him as family?" Lily asked, trying to understand her daughter's feelings.
"I know he's not my dad," Sutton said quickly, as though to clarify her thoughts. "But he was always looking out for us. He saved me."
