Chapter 23

"If you ask, how did ancient Greece and Rome impact literature?"

I was having trouble staying awake in these early morning classes. I feel like I could fall asleep at any time. It's not that the topic isn't intriguing, but we have already discussed the history of literature so many times.

"They raised storytelling into an art form. Heroism, fate, and the human condition have been studied in Homer's epic poetry such as the Iliad and Odyssey, as well as in Sophocles' and Euripides' plays."

I was constantly glancing at my phone to check the time. Mabuti naman at malapit nang matapos. Few minutes left before vacant time.

"How about the Renaissance? I hope you all are already familiar with how the Renaissance brought classical learning while also honoring the human potential." Naglakad ang professor sa harapan.

I checked my phone again, waiting for a message. Kagabi pa ako hindi minemessage ni Davin! What a dummy!

"For example, Italian poets like Petrarch popularized the sonnet form. And we also had Machiavelli and Erasmus who explored political theory and humanist philosophy. Then how about the origin of romance novels? Anyone? Basta pagdating sa romance, buhay na buhay kayo," our professor gestured his hand, as if waiting for us to raise our hand.

My blockmates recited randomly but I remained leaning my face against my palm.

"Samuel Richardson's Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, sir!"

"Alright. What's with him and his novel?" our prof nodded.

"He's the first person who wrote a romance novel?"

"Uh-huh, okay."

"It's about the treatment of virtue and love?" umingay ang mga kaklase ko.

Wow, doon lang yata sila naging active.

"Bigla kayong naging active, ah? 'Yan tayo, e," our professor shook his head. "Okay, dismissed. Mas kailangan kong sagutin 'tong tawag ni love," biro pa niya sabay sagot sa phone niya.

Sana lahat, sir. Wala pa kasing message 'yong love ko.

I shook my head at my own thoughts before heading out of the room. Soon as I arrived outside, my phone vibrated. I quickly turned on the screen only to see Renzler's name.

"What?" I answered the phone call.

"Twinnie! Hindi ka ba uuwi bukas?" tanong ni Renz.

Pinag-isipan ko saglit ang sinabi niya. I remembered that tomorrow would be Saturday. Usually, Renzler and I would go home upon holidays and weekends.

"Let's see how it goes first, Renz. Kung wala kaming masyadong gagawin sa ibang subject, I'll let you know if I'm going to come along with you," I explained, feeling a little bad now.

I'm sure Mama missed me already, and I absolutely feel the same. But it seems there is a greater chance that I may not be able to come home tomorrow.

"Sure, sure," he simply answered. "Oo nga pala, kung hindi ka makakauwi bukas at wala na ako, alagaan mo 'yong baby ko."

I almost want to roll my eyes. He was talking about his siamese cat that Edorina gave him as a gift before she departed to Japan.
