A few months later...
---"Come on, Jayce, make a wish," Ariana said from beside me. I looked around at the dinner table of my childhood home to see all my friends and family sitting patiently, waiting for me to blow out my birthday candles. Well, everyone except one person.
"It just doesn't feel right to celebrate without him though," I sigh.
"Maybe you should dedicate your wish to him then," Victoria suggests.
"Perfect idea, Vic," I gave the dark skinned woman a big smile before looking over at Phillip and Ariana, "I might need a little help with this one."
"Oh, of course," Phil says as he walks over to where Ari and I were sitting.
"To my long lost brother. I hope heaven's been treating you well," I say before I blew out the candles along with Phil and Ari.
"Time to get this fucking party started!" Reggie shouts as he leads everyone to the backyard where the real party was being held.
I got up from my seat, ready to follow everyone when I was held back by someone grabbing my hand.
"Hey, you doing okay?" Ariana asks. I'm sure she could tell by the expression on my face earlier that something was wrong.
I let out a sad sigh, "Yeah, I just—I really miss him. He would've definitely been the life of the party if he was here."
"And I'm sure he wouldn't want you to mope around wondering what could've happened. He's always gonna be with you, cheering you on from the sidelines," Ariana tells me.
"Guess you're right," I smile as I tightly wrapped my arms around her, "I'm really glad you stayed with me all this time."
"It's you and me against the world, Jay. You know I'll do anything for you," She hugs me back just as tight, "Now, let's go have a great party."
---
"Hey, I'm gonna go out for a bit. I'll be right back," I call out to my girlfriend as I grabbed my keys.
I didn't even wait for her response as I left, locking the front door behind me and making my way down the sidewalk with no destination in mind.
I took my phone out of my pocket along with my headphones, plugging them into my ears and turning on one of my favorite songs.
After about an hour, I decided to head back home. On the way, I stopped by a local corner store to pick up a few snacks for Ari and I.
I was walking past the alley and that's when it happened; a cold, metal object was pointing right at the back of my head.
"Walk backwards. Very fucking slowly," The unknown voice spoke as he grabbed my arm, pulling me farther and farther into the alleyway with him.
I was soon surrounded by Latin King members as my back slammed against the wall from being pushed around.
"Hey champ, long time no see, huh?" Santiago spoke with Diego and Dalton trailing right behind him.
I scoff, "The only thing I see is the fact that you haven't come to terms with your sister's death. Honestly, that bitch had it coming."
