Twenty Three

I'm not sure if this night could get much worse. Adam awkwardly opens the bathroom door for Tanya and then I realise it can get much worse for Adam, as Martin walks into the hallway and loudly asks, "So do you fancy her?"

Thankfully it is finally time for food, for once, I am sat next to Jonny, where Adam usually is, and Adam is next to Tanya. Martin is filling the silence with facts he knows about history.

"So you're a musician?" Tanya asks Adam.

"Failed musician." Jonny cuts in.

The argue between themselves and Adam insults Jonnys job, which is being an estate agent. Adam, in typical fashion insults Jonny but Tanya points out how her dad is an estate agent and the look on Adams face whilst he tries to backtrack is unbearable to witness. "I'm a journalist," I add which thankfully causes Tanya to ask me some questions about my job instead.

"Jonny pass Tanya some more vegetables," Jackie instructs, which he obliges.

The four of us continue chatting about work.

"Adam, why don't you ask Tanya a bit about herself?" Jackie suggested, with anticipation.

Adam rolled his eyes but complied. "Thanks, Mum. I do know how to talk to other humans."

"Well, it wasn't apparent earlier," Jackie teased.

Suddenly, a loud burp echoed through the room. It made me jump slightly, and the potato on the end of my fork fell back onto the plate, which Jonny noticed and I heard him laugh to himself. "Dad! Can you please stop burping?" Adam exclaimed.

"Sorry, it's all that parsley I had," Martin replied sheepishly.

"Sorry, when were you eating all this parsley?" Jackie asked, her brow furrowing in confusion.

Martin shrugged.  "When were you eating parsley?" she repeated, more slowly this time.

"Earlier. I fancied a bit."

"What, raw parsley?" Jackie asked, this caused us all to look at him, although except for Tanya we knew that this wasn't the weirdest thing Martin had done.

"Well, I only had a few sprigs," Martin admitted.

Adam changes the subject back to jobs by asking Tanya about her work with Coca-Cola, which seems interesting. However, it quickly led to a discussion laced with confusion,

"Obviously the owners of Coca-Cola are multi-millionaires." Adam clarifies for his dad. Martin shrugs off what Adam says to check with Tanya instead. Adam, Jonny and I exchange glances at each other in understanding of how tedious this is becoming.

I miss the next part of the conversation, mainly as Jonny and I maintain eye contact for longer than I anticipated.

"England is a great country," Martin concludes. "They used to call us Perfidious Albion,"

Poor Tanya struggles to work out what he means by this, let alone even pronounce what he said. I watch Adam put his head in his hands and Jonny is trying his best to not laugh. I wouldn't say luckily, but Martin stops talking about perfid- whatever it was and starts choking loudly. It reminds me of a cat, coughing up a hairball.

Adam attempts to show off and open the pickle jar for Tanya but ultimately he struggles.

"Okay Mr Muscles." Jonny mocks as Adam continues.

"It doesn't open!" Jackie informs us,

"So why is it even out?" Adam questions whilst sounding frustrated.
