Scene: Firehouse 118, Common Area
Eddie reads the text from Shannon’s parents, his frown deepening. Buck notices the shift in his friend’s mood.
Buck: "Everything alright?"
Eddie: (sighing) "It’s Shannon’s parents. They want to take Christopher to live with them permanently. They think it would be better for him."
Buck: "Do you think they might actually try to take him?"
Eddie: "I’m afraid so. They’ve been talking to my parents, and now they’re all against me. They think Christopher would be better off with them."
Buck: "That’s tough, man. What are you gonna do?"
Eddie: "I’m not letting him go without a fight. He’s my son, and he belongs with me."
Buck: "I’ve got your back, Eddie. Whatever you need."
Scene: Eddie's Apartment, Later That Night
Eddie paces the living room, talking to his lawyer on the phone while Christopher is asleep in his room.
Eddie: "I understand. We’ll need to prepare for a custody battle. Thank you for your advice. I’ll gather all the necessary documents."
He hangs up and sits down, running a hand through his hair. The weight of the situation presses heavily on him.
Scene: Family Court, A Few Weeks Later
The courtroom is tense. Shannon's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Diaz, are seated with their lawyer. Eddie is on the opposite side with his lawyer, visibly anxious but resolute. Buck, Hen, Chimney, and Bobby are seated behind Eddie, showing their support.
Judge: "We are here today to determine the custody of Christopher Diaz. Mr. and Mrs. Diaz, you may present your case."
Mr. Diaz: "Your Honor, we believe Christopher would be better off living with us. Eddie is a firefighter and often works long and dangerous hours. Christopher needs stability and a safe environment, which we can provide."
Eddie's Lawyer: "Your Honor, Eddie Diaz is a devoted father who has always prioritized his son's well-being. He has a strong support network in Los Angeles and has been providing a loving and stable home for Christopher."
Judge: "Mr. Eddie Diaz, would you like to say anything?"
Eddie: "Your Honor, Christopher is my world. I moved to Los Angeles to give him a fresh start after the loss of his mother. My job as a firefighter is demanding, but I have the support of my team, who are like family to us. As you can see behind me, my team is here to help Christopher and me. They would do anything for him, especially Evan Buckley, also here in the audience, who Chris considers like his best friend. My son is happy and thriving, and I believe that keeping him with me is in his best interest."
The judge nods, taking in the statements before calling a recess.
Scene: Outside the Courtroom
Eddie steps outside the courtroom, his friends surrounding him.
Buck: "You did great in there, Eddie."
Hen: "We’re all here for you, no matter what happens."
Bobby: "Stay strong. We believe in you."
Eddie nods, grateful for their support. As they wait for the judge’s decision, he receives a call from his parents.
Mr. Diaz (Eddie’s father): "Eddie, we’re doing this for Christopher. He needs a stable home, and we think you’re too busy with your job to provide that."
