Scene: Hospital Room, Discharge Day
The morning sun streamed through the hospital window, casting a warm glow over the room. Buck was sitting on the edge of the bed, his hospital gown replaced with a comfortable pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt that Eddie had brought from home. He still felt weak, but the prospect of leaving the hospital filled him with a renewed sense of strength and determination.
Eddie: "Ready to go home?"
Buck nodded, a smile playing on his lips.
Buck: "I can't wait. Feels like I've been here forever."
Eddie helped Buck to his feet, steadying him as they made their way to the door. The walk down the corridor felt surreal, each step bringing Buck closer to normalcy. Nurses and doctors waved them off with smiles and well-wishes, a testament to the bonds Buck had formed during his stay.
Nurse Nic caught up with them as they reached the elevator, handing Eddie a small bag.
Nic: "Don't forget Buck's medications and extra bandages. And remember, if you have any questions, just give us a call."
Eddie: "Thanks, Nic. We'll take good care of him."
Buck gave Nic a grateful nod.
Buck: "Thanks for everything, Nic."
As the elevator doors closed, Buck took a deep breath, the reality of leaving the hospital finally sinking in. It felt like the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
They stepped out into the hospital lobby, where a few more familiar faces greeted them. Buck's physical therapist gave him a thumbs-up, and one of the cafeteria workers waved enthusiastically. It was clear that Buck had touched many lives during his stay.
Finally, they reached the exit, where Dr. Hawkins met them, a clipboard in hand.
Dr Hawkins: "Buck, you've made incredible progress. Keep up with your therapy and follow the care instructions. You've got a great support system, so lean on them."
Buck shook Dr. Hawkins' hand, his grip firm despite the lingering weakness.
Buck: "Thank you, for everything."
Eddie: "We'll make sure he follows the instructions, Doctor."
With a final nod, Dr. Hawkins stepped aside, and Eddie and Buck stepped out into the bright, open air. Eddie had parked the car as close as possible to minimize Buck's walking, and he helped Buck settle into the passenger seat. The fresh air filled Buck's lungs, a stark contrast to the sterile hospital environment he had grown accustomed to.
As they drove home, Buck looked out the window, taking in the familiar sights of the city. The streets were bustling with people going about their day, and the vibrant energy of the city was palpable.
Buck: "I missed this. Just being out here."
Eddie glanced over, his eyes filled with love.
Eddie: "We missed you too, Buck. You're going to get the welcome home you deserve."
Buck's gaze wandered, and he caught sight of a park they used to frequent with Christopher. The memory brought a smile to his face.
Buck: "I can't wait to take Chris to the park again. I miss those weekends."
Eddie: "Soon, Buck. We'll get back to that soon."
As they drove through their neighborhood, Buck noticed the subtle changes that had occurred during his absence - a new mural on a building, a café that had changed its awning color, and neighbors tending to their gardens. It was all so familiar, yet slightly different, as if the world had moved on while he was confined within the hospital walls.
