After the feast, we followed the Gryffindor Prefect through the winding corridors of the castle. I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety with each step. The castle was enormous, its stone walls lined with portraits that whispered and watched us as we passed. We finally reached a large portrait of a rather plump woman in a pink silk dress.
"Password?" she asked in a melodious voice.
"Caput Draconis," the Prefect replied.
The Fat Lady's portrait swung open, revealing a cozy room with a roaring fireplace, plush armchairs, and tapestries depicting brave deeds from ages past. The room was warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the cold halls of Grimmauld Place. Sirius and I immediately claimed the couch closest to the fire, our usual place of refuge.
"This is perfect," Sirius said, stretching out comfortably. He looked around, his eyes filled with a rare sense of contentment. "Our own little corner of Hogwarts."
I nodded, feeling a bit of the tension leave my shoulders. The fire crackled merrily, casting a warm glow over the room. Other first years were milling about, introducing themselves and making tentative friendships. I saw James, Remus, and Peter chatting animatedly in a corner, already forming a tight-knit group.
As the night wore on, we eventually made our way to our dormitories. I felt a pang of nervousness as I climbed the stairs, clutching my bag tightly. I found myself sharing a room with Lily Evans, Alice Fortescue, and Marlene McKinnon. They seemed friendly enough, their smiles genuine and welcoming.
Lily was unpacking her trunk with neat precision, her green eyes bright with curiosity. "Excited for tomorrow?" she asked, glancing over at me.
"Yes, but also a bit nervous," I admitted, my voice trembling slightly. "It's all so new."
"You'll do great," Alice assured me with a warm smile. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a tidy braid, and she had an air of quiet confidence about her. "We're all in this together."
"Yeah, and if you ever need help, just ask," Marlene added, her tone cheerful. She had a mischievous glint in her eye, much like Sirius. "We're all Gryffindors here, after all."
I smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. We chatted quietly as we unpacked, sharing our hopes and fears for the year ahead. Lily told us about her Muggle family and how strange it was for them to have a witch in the family. Alice shared stories of her older brother, who was also a Gryffindor, and Marlene regaled us with tales of the magical creatures she hoped to study.
"Do you have any siblings here?" Lily asked me as she folded her robes neatly into her trunk.
I nodded. "My twin brother, Sirius. We're really close."
"That's lovely," Alice said. "It must be nice to have family here."
"It is," I agreed, though I didn't mention the heavy expectations our family had placed on us.
As we settled into bed, the room grew quiet. I lay there, staring at the canopy above my bed, my mind racing with thoughts of the day to come. The anxiety that had been my constant companion for so long still lingered, but it was tempered by a newfound sense of belonging. For the first time, I felt like I was part of something bigger, a place where I could forge my own path.
The last thing I heard before drifting off to sleep was the soft, steady breathing of my new friends. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for now, I was content. We were all in this together, and with Sirius by my side, I felt ready to face whatever Hogwarts had in store for us.
