The first meal back in the Great Hall brought a surge of anxiety to Eliza. The grand room was alive with the buzz of returning students, their laughter and chatter creating a festive atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the turmoil in Eliza's mind. The enchanted ceiling reflected a clear, starry night, adding a touch of magic to the scene. Yet, despite the familiar and comforting surroundings, the memories of her parents' wrath during Christmas haunted her, casting a shadow over the otherwise joyous occasion.

As she walked into the hall with Sirius and the other Marauders, Eliza felt her chest tighten. The smell of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding wafted through the air, normally a mouth-watering scent, but tonight it only served to remind her of home—of the place she dreaded.

"Eliza, over here!" James called, patting the empty space next to him on the Gryffindor table.

Eliza forced a smile and took her seat, but her mind was elsewhere. She barely noticed the food appearing before her as she mechanically filled her plate. Her thoughts were a swirl of past confrontations and her parents' harsh words, each memory a fresh wound.

Remus, ever observant, noticed her unease almost immediately. Sliding into the seat next to her, he gave her a gentle nudge. "Hey, you alright?" he asked softly, his voice barely audible over the din of the hall.

Eliza glanced at him, her eyes betraying her inner turmoil. "Just... memories," she admitted, her voice shaky.

"Don't worry, Eliza. You're safe here," Remus whispered, his presence a comforting anchor amidst the bustling hall. His eyes held a warmth that chased away some of her fears, offering a silent promise of support and understanding.

Eliza managed a small smile, grateful for his understanding. She picked up her fork, trying to focus on her meal. The food, usually so comforting, felt like sawdust in her mouth, but she forced herself to eat. She couldn't let her fears overshadow the beginning of a new term, especially when surrounded by friends who cared so deeply for her.

Sirius, sitting across from her, noticed the exchange and raised an eyebrow. "Everything alright, Eliza?" he asked, his tone casual but his eyes filled with concern.

Eliza nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She didn't want to burden Sirius with her worries; he had enough of his own. Instead, she reached out and squeezed his hand briefly, a silent thank you for his presence.

James, oblivious to the undercurrent of tension, launched into a recounting of their summer escapades, his animated storytelling drawing the attention of those around him. "And then, just as we thought we were caught, the fireworks went off! It was brilliant, you should have seen the look on Filch's face!"

Laughter erupted around the table, and Eliza found herself chuckling despite her anxiety. The Marauders' antics never failed to lift her spirits, even if just a little.

As the meal went on, Eliza felt the heavy weight on her chest slowly begin to lift. Remus's quiet reassurances and the familiar camaraderie of her friends provided a much-needed distraction from her dark thoughts. She knew she wasn't alone—she had the Marauders, and together they could face anything.

As dessert appeared—a glorious array of puddings and pastries—Eliza allowed herself to relax a little more. She reached for a treacle tart, her favorite, and took a bite, savoring the sweet, comforting flavor. For the first time that evening, she felt a genuine sense of hope.

"See, this isn't so bad, is it?" Remus whispered, nudging her again with a gentle smile.

Eliza shook her head, her own smile growing. "No, it really isn't. Thanks, Remus."

"Anytime," he replied, his eyes twinkling with affection. "We're in this together."

The rest of the meal passed more comfortably, the warm glow of the Great Hall beginning to chase away the shadows of Eliza's past. Surrounded by friends and the comforting routine of Hogwarts, she felt her strength returning. The new term was just beginning, and with Remus and the rest of the Marauders by her side, she knew she could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
