Eliza had barely slept. Nightmares plagued her every attempt to find rest, leaving her tossing and turning until the early hours of the morning. When she finally dozed off, her sleep was fitful and disturbed by memories of the Cruciatus Curse and the terror it had brought. By the time dawn's light filtered through the dormitory windows, she felt as though she hadn't slept at all.
Sirius had kept a vigilant watch over her, noticing her restless state. He gently shook her awake when it was time to get ready for the day. "Eliza, it's morning. We need to go down for breakfast and get our timetables."
Eliza groaned softly, rubbing her eyes. "I feel like I haven't slept in days, Sirius."
"I know," Sirius said, his voice laced with concern. "But we'll get through this. Remus and I are right here with you."
Eliza managed a weak smile and got out of bed, feeling the weight of exhaustion pressing down on her. She dressed slowly, her movements lethargic, but Sirius remained patient, offering silent support.
In the Great Hall, the Marauders and Eliza found their usual seats at the Gryffindor table. The smell of bacon, eggs, and freshly baked bread filled the air, but Eliza could hardly muster an appetite. She picked at her food, her mind still clouded by the remnants of her nightmares.
"Morning," James greeted them, his eyes flicking to Eliza with a hint of worry. "How are you feeling, Eliza?"
"Better now that I'm with you all," she replied softly, though her tired eyes betrayed her words.
As the plates cleared and the breakfast chatter filled the hall, Professor McGonagall began handing out the new timetables. The Marauders received theirs with eager curiosity, scanning the parchment for their classes.
Remus looked at his timetable and then at Eliza's. His eyes widened slightly, a mixture of relief and determination crossing his face. "Eliza, we've got the exact same timetable."
Eliza glanced at her parchment and saw that Remus was right. Every class, every period, matched perfectly. "Looks like we'll be spending a lot of time together," she said, a hint of a smile breaking through her fatigue.
Remus squeezed her hand under the table. "I'll be right there with you, every step of the way."
Sirius, overhearing the exchange, nodded approvingly. "Good. Remus will keep an eye on you. We all will."
James leaned over, looking at their timetables. "So, Defense Against the Dark Arts first, then Transfiguration, Potions, and Charms after lunch. Should be a good start to the year."
Peter, munching on a piece of toast, added, "At least we're all together for most of our classes. Makes it easier to watch each other's backs."
The bell rang, signaling the start of the first class. Remus and Eliza stood up together, their books and supplies ready. As they walked through the corridors, Remus stayed close to Eliza, his presence a constant reminder of his protection and support.
In Defense Against the Dark Arts, they found seats at the back of the classroom. Remus made sure to sit next to Eliza, his body language radiating protectiveness. Professor Lupin, noticing Eliza's pale face and tired eyes, gave her a reassuring nod as he began the lesson.
Throughout the day, Remus remained by Eliza's side, his attentiveness unwavering. In Transfiguration, he helped her with complex spells, patiently explaining the finer points of the transformations. In Potions, they partnered up, their teamwork seamless as they brewed intricate concoctions. And in Charms, Remus's steady hand guided her wand movements, ensuring her success.
By the time dinner rolled around, Eliza was exhausted but grateful for the support of her friends. As they sat together in the Great Hall, Sirius and James shared tales of their classes, their banter lightening the mood.
"Did you see McGonagall's face when we turned those teacups into mice?" James laughed, nudging Sirius.
Sirius grinned. "She was impressed, though she'd never admit it."
Eliza chuckled softly, the warmth of their camaraderie easing some of her weariness. She looked around at her friends, feeling a flicker of hope amidst the shadows of her past.
As the evening wore on, they returned to the common room, settling into their usual spots by the fire. Remus, ever attentive, sat close to Eliza, his hand resting gently on hers.
"We're in this together, Eliza," he said quietly. "We'll get through this year, one step at a time."
Eliza nodded, her heart swelling with gratitude and love for her friends. "Thank you, Remus. Thank you all."
The fire crackled softly, casting a warm glow over the Marauders and Eliza as they settled in for the night. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, they faced them together, their bond unbreakable and their spirits intertwined.
