By October, the full weight of their seventh year at Hogwarts was palpable. Between the demands of N.E.W.T. classes and the undercurrent of tension regarding Voldemort's rise, the Marauders and Eliza found themselves stretched thin. Yet, they remained steadfast, finding solace in the strength of their bond.
One brisk Saturday, Remus planned a surprise for Eliza to lift her spirits—a private picnic beside the Black Lake, hidden away from the usual bustle of the school grounds. With the help of James and Sirius, he set up a cozy spot with blankets and an assortment of treats from the kitchens.
As Eliza approached the lakeside with Remus, her eyes widened in surprise and delight. "Remus, this is amazing," she breathed, taking in the sight of the cozy setup. "You did all this for me?"
Remus smiled, his heart lightened by her happiness. "You deserve a break, Eliza. We all do," he replied, passing her a sandwich. "And I had some help from James and Sirius."
Eliza sat down on the blanket, feeling a rare moment of peace as she gazed out at the gentle ripples on the water's surface. "This... this is perfect, Remus. Thank you," she said, her eyes reflecting the serene environment.
The afternoon drifted by with laughter and lighthearted conversation. For a few precious hours, they set aside their worries about the future and Voldemort's shadow, focusing instead on the simple joy of their company. Remus recounted funny anecdotes from their classes, and Eliza shared stories of their childhood pranks with Sirius, bringing bouts of laughter that echoed across the lake.
"Remember that time we turned all the Slytherins' hair blue for a week?" Eliza giggled, leaning into Remus.
Remus chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "How could I forget? Snape looked like he'd been dipped in ink."
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the lake, Eliza felt a wave of gratitude for this stolen moment of tranquility. Despite her ongoing struggles with nightmares and exhaustion, this afternoon with Remus was a reminder of the strength and love that surrounded her.
Back at the castle, however, the strain of sleepless nights and lingering trauma was evident to anyone who looked closely. Eliza's pale complexion and dark circles under her eyes didn't go unnoticed. The Marauders' protectiveness grew more pronounced, and other students began to whisper and speculate about their behavior.
"Is Eliza okay?" Lily Evans asked one day, her concern evident as she approached James in the common room.
James glanced over at Eliza, who was sitting with Remus and Sirius, her head resting on Remus's shoulder. "She's had a rough summer," he said carefully, not wanting to divulge too much. "But we're all looking out for her."
Lily nodded, her brow furrowing. "If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know."
James smiled appreciatively. "Thanks, Lily. We'll let you know."
Meanwhile, Eliza's exhaustion was becoming harder to hide. During Potions class, she found herself struggling to concentrate, her mind foggy from lack of sleep. Remus, noticing her difficulty, subtly nudged her in the right direction, offering quiet reassurances.
"Eliza, add the powdered root now," he whispered, his voice gentle and calming.
Eliza blinked, trying to focus. "Right. Thanks, Remus."
In Defense Against the Dark Arts, Sirius made sure to sit beside her, ready to step in if she needed help. Professor McGonagall, aware of Eliza's struggles, offered her extra time for assignments and discreetly kept an eye on her during lessons.
Despite the support from her friends and teachers, the constant protectiveness sometimes made Eliza feel even more isolated. One evening, as they sat in the common room, she voiced her frustrations.
"I appreciate everything you guys are doing for me, but sometimes it feels like I can't breathe," Eliza admitted, her voice wavering. "I just want to feel normal again."
Remus reached for her hand, his expression filled with empathy. "We just want to make sure you're okay, Eliza. But we'll try to give you some space."
Sirius nodded, his eyes softening. "We're not going anywhere, but we'll ease up a bit. Just let us know if you need anything."
Eliza smiled faintly, the weight on her chest lightening slightly. "Thank you. I love you all."
James grinned, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "And we love you, Eliza. We're in this together."
As the night wore on, the common room filled with the sounds of laughter and camaraderie. The Marauders and Eliza, despite the challenges they faced, found strength in each other, determined to make the most of their final year at Hogwarts. The bond they shared was unbreakable, a beacon of hope in the midst of uncertainty, and they knew that as long as they stood together, they could face anything that came their way.
