*The scene opens with a much younger Jonte eating a bowl of cereal at the table. The table is covered with trash and other miscellaneous items. Soon a young girl comes and sits down at the table with him*
Jonte: Hey sis.
Jodi: Whatchu eating?
Jonte: Just some cereal. It's all we really have to eat right now.
Jodi: Why aren't you using a spoon?.
Jonte: Because there are none in the cabinet, sink or dishwasher. Mom must've used them for her little happy snack or whatever she calls it.
Jodi: Oh.
Jonte: Grab yourself a bowl, I'd much rather eat with someone else at the table than by myself.
Jodi: Alright.
*Jodi walks into the kitchen and grabs a bowl. She then pours the cereal into the bowl and walks over to the kitchen sink. She twists the knob and a dark brown liquid pours out into the bowl. She then turns the sink off and walks back to the table.*
Jonte: So what cereal did you go with?
Jodi: I went with the Honey Nut Cheerios.
Jonte: Nice. I went with the cinnamon toast crunch. Not like either of us had that many choices though. Considering these were the only two cereals left.
Jodi: Ha. Well now there's only one choice. This is the last of the Cheerios.
Jonte: Uh oh. That's not good. You know how dad gets about his cereal.
Jodi: Well it's not our fault our parents don't buy us anything else to eat. Do they expect us to just starve to death?
Jonte: It definitely feels that way sometimes.
Jodi: I just wish they showed more interest in us. It almost seems like they don't even love us.
Jonte: Don't say that sis. Our parents do love us.
Jodi: Then why does daddy hit you? Why does he hit mommy? That doesn't seem like love to me.
Jonte: I- I don't know. But I do know that our parents love us. Even if they don't show it as much as they should.
Jodi: Do you really believe that?
*Jonte hesitates for a second before answering, contemplating whether or not he should be honest or lie to give his sister hope for a better future.*
Jonte: Yes. Yes I do, Jodi.
Jodi: Okay, big bro.
*Jodi's face brightens up and she forms a slight smile as she eats the rest of her cereal.*
Jodi: Well I'm done with my dinner. I'm gonna go play in my room now. Do you wanna play with me Jonte?
Jonte: Sorry little sis, but once I finish my cereal I plan on going to bed.
Jodi: Awe, Okay. I'll see you in the morning then. Hope you sleep well.
Jonte: Thank you. I'll try to.
*Jodi walks to her room leaving Jonte alone to finish his cereal. Jonte picks up the bowl and gulps down the rest, he then walks to his room and falls asleep for a while until a noise wakes him up.*
Jonte: What was that?
*Jonte sits up and listens closely until he hears his parents' voices. Knowing they are home now, he lays back down and pretends to be asleep.*
*The scene then changes to focus on the parents' conversation.*
Dad: That son of a bitch ripped me off. Three-hundred fucking dollars for a teenth? What kinda bullshit is that?
