Minji brought their breakfast to the kitchen and placed the food on delicate plates. After finishing her arrangements, she brought the plates to the dining table. She then hesitated, wondering if she should go upstairs and call Hanni to come down and eat. But just then, Hanni slowly came down the stairs, wearing a beige, lace-embroidered dress.
"Morning." Hanni saw Minji by the table and habitually smiled, nodding.
"Morning." After a moment of shock, Minji turned and pointed to the food on the table. "I've prepared some breakfast."
Hanni walked towards the table. She looked at the exquisite breakfast and replied, "It looks delicious."
"It's good that you like it." Minji handed Hanni some chopsticks from across the table.
"Thank you." Hanni took the chopsticks and politely thanked Minji.
"You're welcome." Minji also replied politely.
Wait, there's something wrong here! Hanni sat down and thought about the situation as she began to eat. She had been married to Minji for five years. When Minji handed her a pair of chopsticks, she was habitually polite as she said her thanks, and similar to the person she was married to for five years, the person in front of her replied in a polite manner.
Day after day, in those five years, their conversations were like this, and Hanni had never thought anything of it. Just now, she suddenly realized that today, on the first day of their marriage, such polite and formal language was understandable. However, even after five years of being together, their way of speaking had stayed the same. Courteous, as if speaking to a guest. How strange. As she pondered this, her eyes unconsciously fell on the person eating breakfast across from her.
Minji had long noticed Hanni's gaze. At first, she pretended not to know and continued to eat, but after a while, Hanni's eyes still remained on her, and she started to feel uncomfortable. But being a well-established businesswoman, she naturally wouldn't call Hanni out on it and make Hanni uncomfortable. So as she put down her chopsticks and wiped her mouth with a napkin, she asked, "Was there something you wanted to tell me?"
"Huh?" Hanni blinked. She had been lost in thought and had unknowingly stared at Minji. Minji's sudden question gave her pause, but then she smiled and replied in a natural manner, "This morning, I looked out the balcony and saw a dog out in the yard."
"You saw?" Minji was stunned.
"Hm," Hanni nodded.
"That's Haerin's dog. She went out on a business trip, so she asked me to take care of her dog for a few days. She'll come by later this afternoon and take the dog away." Minji explained, her expression unchanging as she lied.
"Haerin?" Hanni was puzzled, but she had never been familiar with Haerin, so she didn't know if Haerin ever had a dog.
"Yes." Minji nodded.
"Oh..." Hanni no longer thought about it and smiled. "He's pretty cute."
"Cute?" Minji paused, surprise visible in her eyes. "Don't you dislike dogs?"
"How do you know I dislike dogs?" Hanni paused in the middle of sipping porridge and looked at her strangely.
"Well..." Minji tried to act normal as she explained. "I heard that you were bitten by a dog before, so I just figured that you would be afraid of dogs."
"So you know about that." Hanni smiled, then said, "I was very small at the time. I think around five years old when I got bit."
Minji had wanted to say that she knew. She knew that Hanni had been wearing a furry rabbit coat and Hanni's hair had been braided to look like two sheep horns. That when Hanni had been bitten, Hanni had shrunk into her arms and cried for a long time. At the thought of this memory, her face softened.
