When the early morning rays peeked through a gap in the curtains, Minji opened her eyes. Still half-asleep, she instinctively held the woman in her arms tighter. After blinking for a few moments, she sat up, placed a gentle good morning kiss on her partner's hair, and slipped out of bed to freshen up in the bathroom.
As the sound of running water filled the room, Hanni opened her eyes, glancing uncertainly toward the bathroom. What was up with her wife today? When the water stopped, she quickly closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.
Minji emerged, went to the closet to change into sportswear, then returned to the bedside table to check her phone. Seeing no unread messages, she pocketed it, planning a morning run and a stop for fresh roses on her way back. The roses in their garden weren't in bloom, so she'd pick some up from the flower shop.
"Good morning, boss," Mrs. Jung greeted her boss as she cleaned near the stairs.
"Good morning," Minji replied, smiling cheerfully.
Stunned, Mrs. Jung paused mid-wipe. She watched as Minji exited, thinking, boss seems in an unusually good mood today.
Minji reached the courtyard, noticing Choco, who usually joined her on morning runs, wasn't around. She called for the dog twice, but hearing no response, she shrugged, figuring Choco might be playing in the children's room.
Stepping outside, Minji jogged toward the flower shop at the base of the mountain, her breath forming small clouds in the crisp morning air. As she approached the crossroads, she noticed that the zebra crossing, which had only been half-painted yesterday, was finally complete. This small detail brought a flicker of relief to her mild perfectionism.
"Just one rose, please," Minji said, entering the flower shop, the familiar chime of the door greeting her.
The florist smiled warmly as she tied a delicate ribbon around a single rose, handing it to Minji. "For your wife?" She asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"I've been buying flowers here for years. Do you really still need to ask?" Minji chuckled softly, shaking her head.
Minji stepped back into the fresh air, she glanced at her watch. If she hurried, she would make it home just in time to see her wife awake.
With the due date just a few days away, Hanni was noticeably heavier now, her beautiful glow mixed with the exhaustion of impending motherhood.
Minji needed to go back and accompany her wife as soon as possible. As she jogged back, she found herself hoping this new baby would be a girl. She'd had enough of those two mischievous boys they already had.
Mrs. Jung was setting out breakfast in the dining room when she glanced up in surprise at the rose in her boss's hand.
"Is my wife awake yet?" Minji asked.
"Not yet."
"I'll wake her." Minji went upstairs and carefully opened the bedroom door.
Hanni was awake, staring into space.
"Awake?" Minji smiled, stepping into the room.
Startled, Hanni turned, confused as her wife offered her the rose.
"You..." Hanni struggled to find the right words, unsure how to question this sudden tenderness. Maybe this was an apology for last night's... rudeness?
"Would you rather have breakfast here or come downstairs?" Minji asked softly.
"Downstairs," Hanni replied, her expression a bit dark.
"Alright," Minji replied, concern softening her voice. "You look pale. Did you not sleep well?"
Hanni's pointed look was all the response Minji needed.
