Mr. Pham had a passion for collecting wine, so Hanni selected a 50-year-old bottle for her father. For her mother, Minji had prepared a variety of supplements, but Hanni knew her mother couldn't handle too many. Ultimately, she chose a beautifully embroidered silk scarf as her mother's gift.
"Just these two?" Minji asked uncertainly.
"Yes," Hanni replied, nodding.
"Isn't this too little? I've prepared so much, why don't you pick some more?" Although the gifts Minji had prepared were very valuable, she often felt timid and inferior in front of her in-laws.
"Are you worried you won't be able to finish this pile?" Hanni responded incredulously. "In the future, we'll visit every week."
"Every week?" Minji was a little stunned.
"What? You don't want to?" Hanni raised an eyebrow.
Minji frantically shook her head.
Mr. and Mrs. Pham were sitting in the living room, reading a newspaper and peeling an apple. When Hanni and Minji entered, the old couple looked up but didn't initiate a greeting.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward. Hanni wanted to say something to lighten the mood, but Minji stepped forward before she could. She lifted the presents and respectfully greeted, "Dad, mom, sorry I'm late."
Mrs. Pham looked at her husband, nobody knew what Mr. Pham was thinking, but surprisingly, her husband remained silent.
Minji felt embarrassed. As expected, her father-in-law and mother-in-law still didn't like her. She smiled and placed the presents on the coffee table. "I bought some gifts, I hope you like them."
"Hmm." Mr. Pham finally acknowledged his daughter-in-law's presence, but his gaze remained fixed on the newspaper.
However, Minji was already delighted. She couldn't help but look back at her wife, a big smile on her face, clearly asking for praise. Look, your dad accepted the gift!
Hanni wasn't as easily satisfied as Minji. She rushed to her father, angrily snatched the newspaper and said, "Dad, why are you reading a newspaper you already read this morning? Minji is talking to you."
"How do you know I read it this morning?" Mr. Pham retorted. "You weren't here."
"Mom." Hanni saw her father acting stubborn and turned to her mother for help.
Mrs. Pham grinned and set down the fruit knife she was holding. She looked at her husband and said, "Alright, alright, you can end your pretentious act. Otherwise, Hanni will get anxious."
Mr. Pham finally looked up at Minji. "What are you smiling about?" He snapped.
"Nothing." Minji quickly wiped the smile from her face, though she couldn't quite hide it. She hadn't expected Hanni to defend her, and the thought made her heart swell with happiness.
"And why were you lingering by the door? What took you so long?" Mr. Pham continued, clearly intent on giving his daughter-in-law a hard time.
Minji's ears turned red, but she couldn't help the slight curve of her mouth. "I—"
"Never mind, let's just eat." Mr. Pham cut her off with a gruff expression.
"Let's eat," Mrs. Pham interjected with a warm smile, handing Minji a slice of apple.
"Thank you, Mom," Minji replied, glancing at the apple in her hand, feeling genuinely touched.
"Your dad isn't angry with you," Mrs. Pham reassured her. "It's just... you'll understand when you have a daughter of your own."
