Emerson was sprawled across her bed in the Ravenclaw dormitory, a textbook open in her lap. The flickering light of her wand illuminated the pages, but her eyes were glazed over. She wasn't absorbing a single word.
"Em," Olivia's voice cut through the silence, snapping her back to reality. She turned to see her best friend standing in the doorway, her hands clasped together in a gesture that could only mean one thing: she was about to beg for something.
"What's up, Liv?" Emerson asked, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.
Olivia crossed the room, flopping down onto the edge of Emerson's bed. "I need a favour. A big one."
"That sounds ominous," Emerson muttered, closing her book and setting it aside. "Go on, then. What's the favour?"
"Come with me to the Slytherin Quidditch tryouts tomorrow night," Olivia blurted out, her voice rushing over the words as if saying them faster would make them less absurd.
"You want me to do what?" Emerson blinked in disbelief and stared at Olivia as if she'd grown a second head.
"Come on, Em," Olivia pleaded, rolling on her stomach and facing Emerson. "It's not like I'm asking you to sneak into the Forbidden Forest. Just... Come with me to the Slytherin Quidditch tryouts tomorrow."
Emerson blinked, stunned into silence for a moment before she spoke. "Why in Merlin's name would I do that?"
"Because I want you to go."
Emerson shook her head. "Olivia, I don't even go to our own Quidditch tryouts. What makes you think I'd want to go to theirs?"
Olivia gave her an exaggerated pout, crossing her arms. "Because you love me dearly and you know you would feel guilty if I had to go alone."
"Alone?" Emerson narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Why would you even want to go? And don't say it's because you suddenly care about the Slytherin Team, because I know you don't. You are only passionate about Ravenclaws, and I'm not exactly welcome in Slytherin territory these days, in case you've forgotten."
Olivia hesitated, her confident smile faltering for just a moment. "I know, I know. But... I don't want to go alone. It would be weird."
"Weird how?" Emerson pressed, raising an eyebrow.
"Just... Weird!" Olivia groaned, burying her face in her hands. "You know how people talk around here. If I show up by myself to Slytherin tryouts, people are going to think I'm cheating on George."
"That's ridiculous because there's no real reason for you to go," Emerson scoffed, folding her arms. But then, she noticed the way that Olivia didn't look up at her and she realised something. "Hold on a second... There is a reason why you're going, isn't there?"
