Theo's ribs were healed in record time

Theo's ribs were healed in record time. Madam Pomfrey worked fast, mending Theo's ribs with practiced efficiency and little suspicion. She didn't even bat an eye, muttering about how stupid boys always got themselves hurt. Apparently, having a Ravenclaw like Olivia by his side added enough credibility to their lie, making it far easier for them to feign innocence. If it was Enzo or, Merlin forbid, Mattheo bringing him in, the story wouldn't have held up as well.

Emerson knew what she was doing when she quickly thought of a plan to make sure that they all got away with it.

As for Enzo, he looked as if he was never in a fight at all. His skin was clear of bruises, and he walked into class the next morning with his usual easy confidence, smirking like he got away with murder.

To him, he had.

Unlike Cormac and the rest of his Gryffindor friends who weren't so lucky.

They were all caught by McGonagall and promptly assigned a full week's worth of detention, along with a scathing lecture that left Cormac absolutely seething. Allegedly, Cormac had done his best to throw Theo, Enzo, and Mattheo under the broomstick. He claimed they were just as involved as he was, if not the ones responsible, but McGonagall hadn't believed him.

Not when they looked perfectly fine and Olivia backed Theo's story without hesitation.

And then there was Mattheo.

Mattheo, who sat at the Slytherin Table in his usual spot, unfazed. The bruises around his knuckles were intentionally concealed under the cuff of his sleeve.

Mattheo, who lied to Emerson again and refused to tell her the real reason why he snapped and pummeled Cormac McLaggen into the floor.

Emerson stirred her coffee absently, watching the golden liquid swirl. She was so sure she knew why Mattheo started the fight.

At first, it seemed obvious. Cormac was flirting with her days earlier, she flirted back, and Mattheo randomly lost his head over it. But the more she thought about it, the more she doubted herself.

It felt different.

It felt personal.

She wasn't there for the start of the fight, but she was certainly there for the end. She remembered seeing how Mattheo looked at Cormac with such danger and loathing in his eyes. It wasn't just jealousy. It wasn't just Mattheo being possessive over her.

It was deeper than that.

And she hated that she cared.

She hated that even now, after everything, she still found herself looking at him across the Great Hall and watching the way he sat with Theo and Enzo, smirking like he hadn't just shattered her trust a few months ago.
