The next morning, as the sun climbed into the sky and cast a golden light through the castle's ancient windows, Emerson found herself scanning the hallways as she walked from Ravenclaw Tower. She woke up early, with a skip in her step, determined to see Mattheo after she slept through the entire night with nothing but dreams of his lips against hers.
Every time she turned a corner, her heart jumped with excitement, but it only fell again when she found herself face-to-face with students she barely knew or a wall of Slytherins with pointed, uninviting stares.
Her eyes were darting to every corner of the Great Hall as she entered for breakfast with Olivia. The usual crowd of Slytherins sat in their usual spots. But, the person she was searching for was still nowhere to be seen.
Mattheo.
The boy she kissed yesterday, as if her life depended on it. The boy that she could still feel his lips burning against hers if she thought about it enough. The boy who wrapped her entire body with his as they entwined in the pouring rain.
Even Theo and Enzo, who were usually glued to his side, seemed to have vanished into thin air. As her eyes drifted along the Slytherin Table, she caught sight of Draco with Crabbe, Goyle and Blaise. His face was twisted in his usual scowl, and for a moment, she thought of asking him if he knew where Mattheo was. But she stopped herself. The last thing she needed was Draco's prying gaze or one of his rude, judgmental insults.
She tried to tell herself that it was nothing. She wondered if maybe they all just decided to skip breakfast or were holed up somewhere in the Slytherin Common Room. But, Mattheo's absence and the timing of it started to gnaw at her.
A wave of disappointment spread through her chest as she settled into her usual seat beside Olivia at the Ravenclaw Table, who greeted her with a cheerful wave.
"Hey! You look tense," Olivia noted as she set her morning coffee down, eyebrows raised. "Are you alright?"
Emerson hesitated, casting another quick glance around the hall before meeting Olivia's concerned gaze. She poured herself a coffee without a word, adding her usual dash of honey and making it the perfect shade of brown.
Finally, she opened her mouth to brush it off, to say she was fine, but she hesitated. Olivia was her best friend. Keeping something this big from her would be impossible.
She exhaled heavily, her shoulders slumping. "I – I don't know where Mattheo is," She admitted, eyeing Olivia's face for a reaction. "Or Theo or Enzo, for that matter."
Olivia's eyes widened. "And you're worried because...?" She prompted, a mischievous glint already creeping into her gaze.
"Because—" Emerson paused, swallowing. Her cheeks flushed, and she found herself struggling to keep her voice steady. ""I... Kissed Mattheo, Yesterday. Outside, by the lake," She admitted, almost in a whisper, but Olivia's face lit up as though Emerson just told her the most thrilling news in the world.
