Christmas day and night dragged on, leaving Emerson in a haze of anger and frustration in her bedroom. Her mind raced, replaying the argument with her mother over and over again. The words her mother threw at her, the disbelief in her voice and the final ultimatum. It was all too much. Too real.

She couldn't deny that the argument with her mother shook Emerson to the core. She had never seen her mother so furious, and she couldn't shake the feeling of guilt gnawing at her. She shouldn't feel it, but she couldn't help but feel guilty for defending Mattheo and putting him before the only family she had left.

"When the time comes, when you're standing on opposite sides, you will understand just how little you ever meant to him."

The worst part of the argument was that, for a fleeting second, Emerson felt a pang of doubt. She felt the smallest inkling of fear that maybe her mother was right.

What if Mattheo was hiding something she hadn't seen?

What if he did choose to follow in his father's footsteps? What if one day, he did turn on her, just like the rest of them?

But the more she thought about it, the more she remembered him. She remembered the parts of him that no one else saw: his letters, him opening up to her in ways no one else had, his desire to protect her against all odds. She knew him. He was complicated. Troubled. But he wasn't his father.

A soft, almost imperceptible sound escaped her lips. Her chest ached as she thought about her mother's words. She spoke of Mattheo as though he were already lost, as though he was the problem. Her mother couldn't understand and she wouldn't even try to. She was too prejudiced in her preconceived thoughts about him. All she saw was the son of the man who killed her husband, as if he were exactly like the man who caused so much pain in their lives.

But, Emerson saw something different in Mattheo now that she knew him. She originally thought the same like her mother but now, she knew him differently. She saw a person in torment who was drowning. He was someone who needed her and, in some twisted way, she needed him too.
