The days at the Montgomery household passed in a blur of warmth and noise, filled with laughter, exasperation, and a kind of ease that Emerson hadn't realised she needed. Emerson had spent countless hours curled up on Olivia's bed, talking about everything and nothing.
Olivia was her constant, of course, but it wasn't just her. Emerson found herself getting caught up in the whirlwind that was Elena and Darcy Montgomery.
Elena, who was in the middle of what Olivia dramatically called her boy-obsessed phase, took every opportunity to pester Emerson with a relentless barrage of questions.
"So, Emerson," Elena would start, voice dripping with curiosity. "What's the deal with you and Mattheo Riddle?"
Emerson, who was peacefully sipping tea, nearly choked. Olivia groaned, already reaching for a cushion to throw at her sister.
"Elena, stop."
Elena dodged the cushion effortlessly. "No, seriously! I heard he was, like, obsessed with you or something. Is he as broody in private as he is in public?"
Emerson shot Olivia a helpless look, but Olivia was too busy pinching the bridge of her nose in pure exhaustion with her younger sister's relentless firing of questions about their male friends.
"Elena," Olivia sighed, "I swear to Merlin, shut up."
"I just want to know," Elena whined, dramatically flopping onto the couch. "You're so mysterious about it, Emerson! I'm just saying, if a boy like Mattheo Riddle was staring at me like he was ready to—,"
"NOPE!" Olivia cut in loudly. "Absolutely not. We are not having this conversation. You are fifteen!"
Darcy, who was minding his own business up until that moment, decided to chime in. "Wait, who's Mattheo Riddle?"
Emerson sighed. Olivia groaned. Elena beamed.
"He's Emerson's dark and mysterious almost-boyfriend," Elena announced proudly.
"He is not my anything," Emerson dismissed, waving a hand.
Darcy blinked. "Is he a Slytherin?"
"Yes," Elena said excitedly.
Darcy scowled. "Then I hate him. His name is ridiculous too. It should be Matthew."
Emerson burst out laughing as Olivia dragged Elena away by the arm, hissing something about "letting Emerson breathe for five minutes."
Darcy simply crossed his arms, unimpressed. "If he's a Slytherin, he's probably a git."
"He is a git," Emerson admitted.
Darcy nodded sagely. "Then I really hate him."
And that was that.
Of course, Elena didn't relent in her questioning. She was constantly waiting for the opportunity to fire away whenever the four of them were gathered.
