Ron had really screwed them over.

Being on the run and hunting horcruxes was already hard enough, but their biologies added another layer of stress. The two alphas were constantly butting heads, with Ron constantly challenging Harry's leadership, on top of being irritable and complaining about everything . Wearing the locket wasn't making things any easier, and neither was Hermione's status as an omega.

Harry was absolutely not prepared for the changes he underwent when he began presenting after he turned seventeen. Heightened senses, an acute awareness of others, not to mention realising just how much omegas would affect him. It was as life-changing as finding out he was a wizard, only he had to stamp down all the urges that he had, all the things that he wanted to do to his best friend.

The first time Harry caught Hermione's sweet scent, it had sent him reeling. At first there was an even greater need to protect and look out for her, and then came the animalistic thoughts of wanting to claim her. His mouth literally watered at the thought of pinning her down on her cot, scent marking her, grazing his teeth against her glands... He couldn't fucking think straight from all the things he shouldn't be imagining about doing to his friend and any feelings he had left towards Ginny went flying out the window. Harry had to force himself to take walks in the forest to clear his head. The brisk air calmed his alpha down enough for him to come to his senses, it was then that he reminded himself that he loved and cared for Hermione as a friend, nothing more.

Hermione, for her part, did everything she could to hide her status. She adhered blockers to her glands, dutifully took her suppressants and cast scent neutralising charms on her cot. But living in close proximity in the tent meant that slip-ups were bound to happen from time to time. Just the knowledge that she was an omega was enough to send Harry spiralling sometimes.

And then there was Ron.

It was clear that he had been affected by Hermione's biology for months. His odd possessiveness and attempts to control her during their sixth year suddenly made sense to Harry. More than once he caught Ron trying to use his voice on her but the suppressants she was taking made her immune to the effects. Harry didn't like Ron's brusque treatment of Hermione and his obvious attempt to stake a claim on her. Every time it was Harry's turn to take watch at night, he was afraid that Ron would try something on her when she was vulnerable. And while Hermione was powerful in her own right and had no trouble defending herself, he was still worried.

The situation was intense. One could practically choke on it. Whenever Harry wore the locket it would speak to his alpha, enticing him to fight off the other alpha and claim the omega. Harry refused to let the horcrux–and their biologies–get in the way of how he treated his friends and he knew that Hermione was of the same mindset. They were a team on an important mission. That was their priority.

The breaking point came when Harry discovered Ron had been tampering with Hermione's suppressants. Her energy seemed to deplete easily, she was more sensitive to Ron's harsh words and when she was finally reacting to his deepened voice it all clicked into place.

Enraged, Harry intervened. Ron was a danger to Hermione and needed to go. After a huge fight that nearly came to blows, he did just that. In a last ditch effort, Ron tried to coax Hermione to leave with him but Hermione had enough control left to decide to stay with Harry. It was just the two of them now.
