The sound of her phone buzzing on the nightstand caused Celeste to subtly gain consciousness. She grabbed the device and answered the call without reading the name. She was met with the sweet voice of her daughter.
"Hi, mommy." Sanai said with an energetic tone. This made Celeste pull the phone from her ear and look at the time. It was around eleven a.m, Celeste groaned at this discovery. She nearly slept the morning away which she hardly ever did.
"Good morning, baby. What you and Pawpaw doing?"
Celeste used her arm to feel the other side of the bed, but it was completely empty. She finally opened her eyes to verify and her predictions were correct.
The left side of the bed hardly looked touched, and although this wasn't an issue, she expected Saint to be right beside her. Her mind convinced her their shared interactions were just drunken actions.
She didn't reflect on this for too long before she went back to her conversation. Sanai was now talking her mother's ear off.
"You and Pawpaw always have fun without me." Celeste told her. Sanai explained how she and her grandfather did some painting around the house and were about to prepare lunch.
Sanai apologized and tried to reason, "It's okay, I can do it again with you."
Celeste smiled softly, "I can't wait. I'll be there in a few hours to get you. I have some things to do today."
The short lived conversation ended and Celeste tried to fall back asleep. It was a failure, so she laid staring at the ceiling for a while.
Celeste spent some time trying to remember what happened last night. She actually believed her energy hit zero percent. She couldn't recall when she changed her clothes or even fell asleep. Celeste was thankful that Saint was there last night to drive her home.
Finally deciding to get up and start her day, Celeste went into her bathroom to shower. The steaming hot water fell against her back as a form of relaxation. She even decided to try a new exfoliator she brought from Target.
Nobody loved showers as much as Celeste. On days where it was permitted, she took a shower multiple times a day. The feeling of water was basically therapy to the mother. It seemed to be an escape from reality. It was just her, her thoughts, and water enclosed in the small space.
Celeste didn't plan on leaving the house for some time, so she dressed herself in a shirt and a pair of underwear. She let her hair fall from the bonnet before running a brush through it. She was surprised by the amount of curl the weave still had, so Celeste made a mental note to order from this company again in the future.
As she walked down the stairs, Celeste jumped in fear as she saw Saint on the couch asleep. She assumed he had left between last night and this morning. As she approached him, she saw him peacefully sleeping with the blanket from Sanai's bed.
