Celeste slowly pushed the glasses up her nose as she read through the textbook. The brightly yellow colored highlighter sat in between her index finger and thumb as she waited for an important detail to stand out.
Her notebook was covered in beautifully written notes and bullet points. The title of each unit was placed on the very first line. Celeste was an excellent learner, she wasn't valedictorian of her graduating class, but she wasn't dumb or a slacker.
Celeste loved expanding her education and acquiring new knowledge. She didn't attend college, but not because that wasn't her plan at eighteen. She did yearn to fill her brain with life's lessons, but that took time and lots of it. Not only that, but it took money.
Celeste's parents worried her of debt obligations, making her shy away from advanced schooling. Attending college and paying the expensive tuition out of pocket wasn't a privilege she had. That's why Celeste enrolled her daughter in a private school and already started saving money for her future endeavors.
As she continued reading, her eyes scanned the pages ensuring to never miss the smallest thing. In school, her instructors were starting the unit on color theory.
It was a foundational topic that all stylists who planned to chemically alter and color hair should understand. Although Celeste didn't specifically plan on coloring and stripping color from natural hair, she still made sure she was knowledgeable to ace her exam.
Once her reading was complete, she skimmed her notes, before getting started on her homework assignment. The instructor explained it in detail in class today and it didn't sound too difficult. Celeste scrolled on the laptop ensuring she picked an answer for each multiple choice question.
As she reviewed her answers, the sound of the bedroom door opening interrupted her. She watched as Saint entered the room, "You still studying?" He asked when he noticed the textbook beside her.
She stretched while replying, "Yeah, I'm almost done. We need to find something to cook for dinner." She stated just as she submitted the assignment.
A celebration of confetti covered the electronic screen. The assignment was graded instantly. She scored ninety-five percent, meaning she answered a question incorrectly. Celeste didn't dwell on it, because that was better than nothing.
"Yeah, hopefully Nai can hold something down. She barely wants to take her medicine." Saint explained as he sat in the bed beside Celeste.
She frowned sadly, "I hate that she's so sick." Sanai was still recovering from her diagnosis. Everyday she was getting better with the help of the medication, but she was still sleeping all day and barely eating.
Celeste was so grateful that she had Saint around to help her now. Without him, she didn't know how she was going to work, go to school, and provide for a sick child.
Celeste's father was getting old and couldn't move as he did years ago. Not only that, Celeste didn't want him to feel obligated or pressured to fulfill the duties of Sanai. That was Celeste's child and that was her responsibility.
