Have you ever had the feeling that something bad is gonna happen? Like something is wrong and it's only a matter of time before the news reaches you? And the feeling causes a horrible anxious fluttering in your heart and belly?
That was exactly how David was feeling two days after the gala, sitting in his office and trying to go through some documents that needed to be signed.
Sighing, he leaned back on his leather chair and pinched the bridge of his nose. He couldn't even call Sarah one more time. He had called her every hour since noon when the nasty feeling had appeared and the last time they had talked was an hour ago and he knew he was driving her crazy.
He had texted her bodyguards and they had texted back that they had picked her and Daisy up and were heading home.
Knowing that he couldn't do anything more, he got up, tidied his desk, and picked up his suit jacket.
Just then, his phone rang and his heart sank before beginning to pound in his rib cage as if the ringtone was an ominous herald of bad news.
Seeing Samuels's name only increased his dread. Gulping his finger glided across the screen to accept the call.
"Samuels." he said putting the phone on his ear.
"Miller, where are you?"
David's heart sank at hearing the sirens and the dread and haste in John's voice.
"Office," answered David. "What's wrong?"
"Call everyone and tell them to be double cautious." hissed John as if in pain. "You too should gather your family and stay put in the ..."
"John, what the fuck is wrong?" David yelled, clutching his phone tightly in his hand.
"I was attacked." answered John. "Around 10 minutes ago. It was aimed at my heart, I was lucky that I turned to a side at hearing a sudden sound from the street. I'm sure it is Shepherd."
"How are you? Are you okay?" David questioned quickly while walking out of his office with quick long strides.
He caught the attention of Aiden and Ainne who were standing beside her desk talking. Both frowned and then their eyes widened at seeing David's pale face and frantic eyes.
"I'm fine or I wouldn't have been talking to you," answered John. "The bullet grazed my arm. But that is not important. The paramedics don't let me talk on the phone anymore. The police are already informed, just call everyone and make sure the security is tight."
There was someone's voice in the background before John let out a pained groan. "Okay, Okay." he said through gritted teeth. "Miller, I should go. Take care until I call you again."
Ending the call, David quickly brought his phone down and began to call Sarah. "Aiden, call Mom and tell her to stay home and be so careful."
"What's wrong?" asked Aiden panicked.
David shook his head as Sarah's phone went to voice mail.
"John was shot. He is lucky that only his arm has been grazed." answered David while calling Sarah one more time.
"Come on, Sarah." he mumbled under his breath, ignoring Aiden's and Annie's panicked state.
Their voices were muffled in his ears by the pounding of his heart. The fear for his love and his daughter was driving him to the brink of madness.
He quickly dialed Sarah's bodyguards when the line went to the voice mail for the second time.
"Thanks God. Where are you? Are they fine?" he yelled the moment the call was answered without waiting for the bodyguard to answer.
