IN THE FIVE DAYS SINCE WELLS HAD BEEN
killed, Waverly had barely slept. Every time she managed to get a couple hours in, she suffered from nightmares. Most nights, she would just twist and turn through the nightmares, and wake up with the unbearable wait of the guilt she was trapped with. More often, she would wake up crying, which usually woke up Harper.

In an attempt to avoid waking up Harper, Waverly started to avoid sleep. It was the only way to avoid her nightmares, which was the only way to ensure that she wouldn't wake up Harper. Harper quickly realised what she was doing and disagreed with the methods. Waverly needed sleep. It was clear by the dark bags around her eyes, her slow movements as she fought against her exhaustion.

"You were up early this morning," Harper noted.

"I couldn't sleep." Waverly said. It was the same excuse. "I'm fine."

"You're not fine." Harper shook her head. "You're barely sleeping these days, Wave. You blame yourself, but it's not your fault."

Waverly only nodded her head, "yes, it is."

She fell asleep and Wells was killed.

It would always be her fault.

"Hey!" Murphy shouted, bringing Waverly to turn to where the wall was being constructed. Murphy's attention was on Connor, who had dropped a tree log. "You think the Grounders are just gonna sit around and wait for us to finish the wall?" He gestured to where Charlotte stood. "Maybe we should let the little girl do the lifting for you, huh?"

Connor looked up, exhausted. "I just need some water, okay? Then I'll be fine."

"Murphy, get this guy some water." Bellamy said, stepping to where Charlotte stood. He gestured down to the dropped log. "Hey, you got this?"

Charlotte stepped forward to lift it, but Bellamy swooped in, grabbing it instead. "I'm just kidding," he joked to the girl, bringing her to smile.

Murphy returned to where Connor was still on his knees. At the sight of him unzipping the front of his pants, Waverly looked away before she saw too much of Murphy.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Murphy?" Connor sprang away as he realised Murphy was peeing on him. He turned to lunge, being stopped by two of Murphy's friends.

"You wanted a water break." Murphy held out his arms. "Get back to work!"

The forged knife sat on the table with the two severed fingers. The dark skin of the fingers were the first sign that they belonged to Wells. Waverly remembered the missing fingers from his hand when she found him dead beside her. She figured the Grounders had taken it, as a strange prize or something. It was the knife that proved otherwise.
