CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: OUT OF THE FIRE...
"this is earth, dad. no where is safe."
WAVERLY WINTER KANE KNEW THIS WAS WHAT
death felt like. It was the only thing that could describe her in this moment. She hair was matted back, covered in blood and dirt that covered most of the rest of her. At least most of the blood was dried. Every inch of her ached. Her right cheek was swollen, leading up to her blackened eye. Her lips were cracked, split, and all she could smell was blood. She forced herself forward, her feet dragging through the dirt of the ground. She wanted to cry out as she moved, pain shooting across her with every inch she moved. A slash across her stomach, deep with the way the blood soaked into her shirt. Another was down her arm, both inflicted from a Grounder's sword. Her chest burned, bruises that spread across her abdomen and chest, but not from a Grounder. No, those were from Murphy beaten her with a rifle.
The ligature marks on her wrists from being tied up in the dropship hurt even more with her being bound by rope again, the material pinching into the indents of her skin. She looked in front at the black horse that trotted through the woods, the ropes binding her together were tied to the horse.
She was tied between two others. Finn was on her right, and Benji, another delinquent from the camp, was to her left. Of the three, Benji seemed to be the worse off as he swayed on his feet, stumbling to the ground as he couldn't hold himself up any longer.
Fear settled in Waverly as the horse stopped, commanded by the Grounder who rode the animal. The same Grounder that had nearly killed Bellamy, Hazel, Finn, and her before they managed to get away. They had just enough time to run from camp, getting as war away from the rockets as possible before they fired. Unfortunately, her arm still got burned in the progress, the bicep bubbled over with blisters. The ends of her hair seared off. The Grounder's head was burnt as well, the skin of his bald head blistering. He followed them out of the camo as well, escaping most of the fire.
Bellamy split away from them, with Hazel. Waverly was glad of it, hoping it meant the two were still alive out there. Hazel's leg was messed up pretty bad from the war. They weren't Grounder prisoners, and she knew even death would be preferable to the fate that awaited them.
"Benji, get up." Waverly said quickly.
"I can't." Benji huffed out. "I can't go anymore."
The Grounder stepped towards them. "On your feet."
"I can't." Benji muttered out, looking up.
"He can't keep up." Finn said.
"I said get on your feet!" The Grounder walked further towards them. Waverly and Finn tried to get Benji back up. The Grounder was too impatient, pulling the rope that bound him. Before the two could protest, he sliced Benji's throat with a blade, killing him.
