CHAPTER ELEVEN: LET'S GO NUTS
"maybe i need to eat more nuts"
HAZEL RAYNE HAD NEVER EXPECTED TO SIT IN
on a council meeting, but she sat beside Clarke with the headset on. The screen sat in front of them, flickering with the video chat system Hazel and Raven had set up, piecing together with the technology in the dropship. In the two days since the storm, they had gotten a lot done."Tell me about the Grounder." Chancellor Jaha said through the call. "Can he provide any insight on how to survive winter?"
"He probably could." Hazel said. "But he hasn't said anything to us. We're not even sure if he speaks English."
She doubted the torture helped much with that. It didn't even save Waverly and Finn's lives. Octavia did that. She was the only one who seemed to be able to get through to the Grounder, and the only one Bellamy was adamant was not allowed to go near him.
"We're doing everything we can to prepare here." Clarke added from beside Hazel. "We're gathering nuts and berries, curing meats, digging for rotos, but the truth is, we'll freeze before we starve."
The glitching camera switched to Marcus Kane, Waverly's father. He was a member of the Council, the one that pushed for sacrificing the three hundred lives. "There's good news on that front. According to civil defense plans from before the war, there's an old emergency aid depot not far from the landing site. Here are the coordinates."
Clarke wrote down the coordinates that Kane showed.
"In addition to supplies, it could provide shelter for the hundred and for the citizens coming down from the Ark." Jaha added.
"And what makes you think its intact?" Clarke asked.
"It was designed to withstand nuclear warfare."
"It's worth a shot." Hazel said, looking towards Clarke. The nights were getting too cold for them to not at least try.
"Chancellor, I have to object." Diana Sydney spoke up. She was the previous Chancellor on the Ark, and the newest member of the Council. She had taken Abby's seat, the woman removed considering her illegal activities. Hazel didn't quite like the woman, wishing Abby was still on the Council. "Project Exodus is underway. The kids should sit tight in their camp until the first dropship arrives."
"Even if everything goes without a hitch, the hundred would die from exposure before relief arrives." Jaha said, a hard tone back towards her. "I'd like a moment alone with Clarke, please. And I know there's a line of parents waiting to talk to their kids."
"Clarke, before I go," Kane spoke up again, the screen shifting to where he was. "How is my daughter?"
"She's okay." Clarke said. "She's healing up, resting in her tent."
