CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: THE COST OF EIGHTEEN DEATHS
"the point of the alliance is to save our friends"
HAZEL WAITED AT THE FRONT GATES OF CAMP
Jaha, impatient for Clarke's return. She was beyond where the Grounders had set up camp near theirs, discussing with the Commander Lexa on whether an alliance would be formed between their people, or if war would reign down on them.It was hours before Clarke made it back to the camp, accompanied by two Grounders on horseback, leading her to the front gates. At the sight of the blonde, Hazel felt the relief rush through her.
"It's Clarke." She said quickly, to Bellamy who stood beside her.
"Hold your fire!" Bellamy called to the guards around the wall. "She's back! Open the gate."
Clarke walked slowly into the camp, her face twisted. Finn quickly ran towards her, bringing Clarke's eyes to widen. She pushed him further into camp, looking back at the two Grounders as she ordered the gate shut. Her hand held tightly to Finn as she urged him away from the wall.
Something was wrong.
Hazel quickly walked with Bellamy, following Clarke and Finn further into the camp. Clarke reached her mother, greeting her with a hug. It barely seemed to relax her. Clarke still stood stiff, fear filling her blue eyes.
"What did she say?" Abby asked. "Is there a chance for a truce?"
Clarke nodded slowly. "Yes."
"Isn't that a good thing?" Hazel asked, watching Clarke.
Finn picked up on her expressions, a frown covering his lips. "What's wrong?" He asked her.
"They want you." She looked up at him. "If we want a truce, we have to give them Finn."
Raven walked over with Jasmine and Waverly. Her eyes were wide at the words. "What the hell are you talking about?" She asked. Hazel only glanced around, noticing the whispers that filled the area. The price being told for all of the camp to hear.
"That's their offer." Clarke mumbled out.
Raven shook her head. "That's not an offer."
"It's a punishment." Finn said. "For what happened in the village. Blood for blood."
"That's insane." Bellamy said.
"They can't seriously think we'd consider that?" Hazel shook her head. "The point of the alliance is to save our friends. How is offering one up doing that?"
Abby watched Clarke. "If we refuse?"
The answer was as simple as they expected. "They attack."
A crowd had quickly gathered around them, hearing well of the predicament they found themselves in. The choice between peace and saving Finn. An easy choice for some of them, such as those who called Finn a friend. They would never imagine handing him over to be killed. The others in the camp didn't see it that way.
