Spencer's P.O.V
"Hello?" I answered my phone.
"Hey, Spencer James, it's Joe Hortiz, general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers. How are you doing?" he responded.
"I'm doing good sir."
"Sorry to bother you at this time of night, but I wanted to be the first to inform you that after hours of negotiations with your agent, we wanted to give you our best and final offer."
"Oh, no worries about the disturbance. What is the offer you had for me?"
"Spencer James, we are prepared to offer you a five-year, $200 million contract to be a part of the Los Angeles Chargers organization. Along with that, the contract includes $150 million guaranteed and a $50 million signing bonus."
"Oh wow. That's the type of contract I wanted all along this offseason."
"Well Spencer, as the best receiver in the NFL, you deserve to be paid as one. With you as our star player, you can help take this team to the Super Bowl and hoist the Lombardi trophy when it's all said and done. You don't have to make your decision now. Take a few days to think about it, discuss it with your family, and when you're ready, you give me a call."
"Yes sir. And thank you for calling me about this contract offer."
"Most definitely, have a good night."
"You too." We both hung up the phone.
After the call, I could no longer keep in my emotions and I had to let it all out. As I was breaking down, Liv was comforting me as she was trying to understand what had just happened.
"Spencer, what happened? Are the girls ok?"
"Liv. The girls are fine. That wasn't my Mom on the phone."
"Then who was it?"
"That was the general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers. He offered me a huge contract to play with the Chargers next season as their star receiver."
"How much did he offer?"
"He offered me a five-year, $200 million contract that is fully guaranteed and includes a $50 million signing bonus."
"Oh my gosh. Baby, that's great." She said and hugged me.
"It is, but at the same time, it's so unreal. On the bright side though, if I accept, we can get to stay home with all of our friends and families. The girls can stay at their schools, no need to worry about new doctors or dentists. And you don't have to worry about your job. "
Liv grabbed and held my hands. "Spencer, all your life you've been working so hard. You've earned this offer. The Chargers believe in you, like I do. Whatever you decide to do, I'm with you."
"There's really no debate here Liv, the Rams gave up on me because they think I'm a liability, I'm not gonna get a better offer than that from other teams interested in me. The only thing that sucks is that I'm leaving Darnell and I ain't even told him. Hopefully, he won't get upset with me."
"No argument here Spencer, the Rams did you wrong by calling you a liability and not offering you a long-term extension. In all honesty, that's like a slap in your face. You make them regret not re-signing you to the team. As for Darnell, he's your friend, Spencer, practically your bother that you never had since Corey was a father figure to him growing up. Then to see the bond y'all created, that's family right there. You guys have had good and bad times, but he'll understand. If not now, he'll eventually come around."
"Thank you, Liv. I'm gonna call my agent tomorrow and ask him to set up a meeting with the general manager of the Chargers so we can get the paperwork taken care of."
"Baby, I'm so proud of you."
"I couldn't have done this without you Liv. Every time I stepped onto the field, I wasn't just playing for me, I was playing for something bigger. I was playing for us, for our family. You've been my rock since day 1, through the ups and downs, you showed that I'm someone worth loving and taking a chance on."
"What can I say, Spencer? I can't imagine my life with anyone else but you. Our family that we built together was one of many accomplishments we've achieved together. Yes, we've had our share of mistakes and regrets, but I wouldn't change it. You wanna know why?"
"Why?
"Because right here, right now, we wouldn't be in this position. Us being together as husband and wife, the four beautiful girls we have and love so much, shows how much we overcome. Like your Mom said, if there was no such thing as mistakes in marriage none of them would last for more than a week."
I laughed. "Yeah, that's my Mom all right."
"I love you Spencer James and I can't wait to see you take this next chapter in your career."
"I love you too, Olivia James."
Liv got on top of me and wrapped her arms around my neck.
"Why don't you show me?"
I smiled at her. "Yes ma'am. You ain't gotta ask me twice."
I kissed her with passion and picked her up as she wrapped her legs around my waist.
We made our way upstairs and when we got to our bedroom, we made passionate love to each other for the rest of the night until we fell asleep in each other's arms.
------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys. Sorry, it took me so long to update. Spencer finally got the contract he deserved, and he is not going anywhere as he is staying in L.A., but only playing for a different team. His hard work has paid off for him to be in this position. Liv was here to witness it and seeing her husband breaking down, shows how much he overcame and Spencer knows he couldn't have done it without her and the rest of the family. Two chapters remain for this book series. Please excuse any mistakes or grammar errors. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section.
