"I'm home!" Minji called out as she closed the front door behind her.

She was looking at the floor as she kicked off her shoes.

But when she lifted her head, she saw Mia sitting on the couch with her head hanging in sadness.

You came out of the kitchen a second later and your arms were folded over your chest as you clenched your jaw in anger.

"What's going on?" She asked with a nervous chuckle but you just looked over at Mia on the sofa.

"Hey, honey. How was your day?"

Mia looked at her but not in the same way she usually does when Minji gets home.

She looked heartbroken as tears filled her little eyes and one slid down her cheek.

Minji frowned and reached out to wipe it away as she prepared to ask her what was wrong.

But that's when something on the table in front of the sofa caught her eye.

A party hat with the words Happy Birthday on it.

Minji looked at you and watched as you shook your head at her in disappointment.

That's when she saw other things around the house that were from a birthday party such as balloons that had floated up to the ceiling and a cake on the counter that said... happy seventh birthday, Mia.

But that was impossible.

Minji would never forget her daughter's birthday, never in a million years.

"Have you put it together yet?" You asked in anger. "It's nice of you to finally show up but it's too late that it was after your daughter's party was over."

"This has to be some sort of joke or prank that you're pulling on me. I wouldn't forget Mia's birthday."

"You did!" Mia shouted as she jumped up from the sofa.

Tears continued to fall from her eyes.

"You never came!"

"I-I'm so sorry, sweetie." Minji quickly apologized before stepping closer to Mia. "You know how much I love you. I would never forget your birthday or your birthday party on purpose. Please forgive me."

"I hate you!" Mia yelled before storming upstairs to her room.

Those three words had never come from her little girl's lips before, not even during tantrums or her worst fits of anger that all kids have.

They hurt so much.

Minji let out a heavy exhale as tears stung her eyes.

Turning around to face you, she saw you staring at her with that same disappointed look you'd given her a few moments before.

"I forgot it was today." Minji quietly said. "I can't believe I forgot."

"You should've seen how sad she was when she realized you weren't going to be here. I watched her eyes fill with excitement every time the door opened today and her friends showed up because she thought it was you. Only to look so heartbroken when she realized it wasn't."

Minji didn't know what to say.

She just gazed at the floor in guilt.

"She got so many presents. All of her friends showed up. But you want to know what she told me? None of that made her happy because you weren't here! She cried and waited for you to come. She looked out that window and kept hoping she'd see you walk through the door but you never did."

Minji looked at you as she cried, feeling the guilt and sadness overwhelm her.

"I can't believe I forgot. I swear I never would on purpose. You know that you and Mia are my everything. You both have been since I met you and since she was born. You're both my whole world."

"Well, today, your seven-year-old daughter felt differently. She expected you to be here and can you blame her for being so upset that you weren't? You're her mom!"

"I just got so caught up in the studio and-"

"In practice, doing photoshoots, doing interviews, planning performances - I get it, Minji! That's what you do. You're an idol. I've known that you have been busy with your schedules since we first started dating! But it's been years since then. We're married and we have a child - a child that counts on you, looks up to you, and adores you more than anything! A child that needs you. Especially on her birthday."

"I know. You're right. You're so right." She sniffled. "What can I do? How can I make it better?"

"I don't know if you can, Minji. But you should be the one that figures out if and how you can. I can't help you with this one."

She hung her head as another tear fell from her eyes.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go tuck Mia into bed. It's time for her to go to sleep. She has school tomorrow."

You walked away from her, leaving her alone with her thoughts and sadness.

She didn't know how she'd ever make this right with Mia.

But she was going to try everything she could.
