"You don't feel the same about me, do you?"

Minji was quiet and the silence between you was thick and uncomfortable, which is something you never want after confessing to someone that you're hopelessly in love with them.

At this point, she didn't have to say it out loud because you already knew.

Her silence after you just put your heart on the line and told her how you truly felt about her said it all and you feel like you've been stabbed in the heart a thousand times.

The ache was strong and the realization that she didn't love you back was devastating,

"When you said that we needed to talk, I didn't think you meant this, Y/N. I'm sorry. I don't know what to say. Your confession caught me off guard and I don't want to lie to you to give you hope and make you feel better when it's just not going to work."

You blinked away the tears in your eyes.

The words from her friends echoed through your mind.

They said that she liked you too and that you just needed to get it off your chest already before it was too late but now you wonder if they knew better and they were just setting you up to confess your feelings for her and make a fool out of yourself.

It sounded cruel but you couldn't think of why they'd tell you that when Minji is sitting here in front of you telling you that she won't ever love you back.

"I should go." You quietly said.

"No, Y/N, please don't leave," Minji begged. "I don't want this to break us apart. I don't want me not feeling the same as you to ruin our friendship. Please don't hate me for not feeling the same."

You looked at her through your tears and wondered how she could think that you could hate her.

"Are you kidding? Minji, even if I wanted to, I couldn't hate you. My heart hurts and I'm devastated that you don't feel the same way that I do but I'll get through it eventually."

She put her hand on your arm and caressed your skin comfortingly.

"Just so you know, I do think you're beautiful and amazing. Your soulmate is somewhere out there and whoever it is, they're very lucky. I wish that I could be that person for you but I just don't love you like that."

You stared at your feet and nodded your head wordlessly, wishing that you could take it all back.

The last year or so that you've known Minji, you've fallen so hard for her, and part of you was so sure that she felt the same way for you.

But now you know that isn't the case at all and that your love for her will only ever be one-sided.

Friends are all you'll ever be and it's a hard pill to swallow, though you know you have no choice but to.

"Just promise me something." She whispered and you looked at her again. "Please tell me that this doesn't change anything between us."

You parted your lips to speak, wanting to tell her that you wouldn't ever let that happen because you care so much about her that you'd do anything for her, even if it means pretending like you're okay when you aren't.

But you shook your head and blinked away the tears in your eyes before saying,

"I wish I could say that but I think I'm going to need a little time for my heart to heal before I feel okay again."

Sadness filled her eyes and you weren't sure if it was because that wasn't the answer she was hoping to hear or if it was because she knew your heart hurt and there wasn't anything that she could do or say to make you feel better.

It would be unfair for her to lie to you and tell you that she feels the same just so she doesn't break your heart and leading you on when she considers you one of her best and closest friends was something she couldn't bear to do.

"I'm so sorry, Y/N. I really am."

"Me too." You sniffled. "I'll be okay. I appreciate you being honest with me. I just need a little time."

She just pulled you in for a hug and as much as you wished that she'd just hold you and have a change of heart, you knew that she wouldn't.

You can't change the way that you feel about her and she can't make herself feel something for you that she doesn't.

So you pulled away from her and let the silence linger between you both for another minute or two before you faked a smile and got up.

"I really do need to go though."

"Okay." She quietly said.

As you slid your shoes on, her phone vibrated and you caught a glimpse of the photo she had set for this person's contact information and saw that the girl in the picture was kissing her cheek and she was smiling so shyly, like she was loving it.

It hit you then - her heart probably belonged to someone else anyway.

This love would only ever be one-sided.

She would never feel the same for you, as much as you wish and dream that she did.

With a cheerful voice, she answered the phone, and you wiped a tear from your cheek, hoping that the person she was talking with knew how lucky she was to be living your dream and to have everything you could ever want but will never have.
