Tanizaki and Yosano remained in pair as they searched around the mall for any other survivors beside the one they found a couple minutes earlier. The woman carried a little girl on her back, trying to hold her tight to prevent her from falling. She was covered in burnt marks and dust, and would've died too, if the doctor wouldn't have found her in time. She could've been around the age of nine at best, though she looked a bit too young to be the age Yosano assumed her to be.
It was dark and smokey, Tanizaki had to use all his strength to be able to see. He never knew if he is going to bump into a beam or a wall, or if he will step into a hole on the ground or on a civil's dead body. Because it already happened. It was not very pleasant, needless to say.
The two entered the last store, which was a bit bigger than the average ones in that mall. Tanizaki went to the left side, while Yosano made her way to the right.
It was hot. Tanizaki had to pull his sweater to his nose to aviod having to inhale the smoke as much as he could. He checked the dressing rooms, the space behind the check-out and the restrooms, while Yosano started between the racks of clothes, which were destined to burn into ashes just like every other flammable product in the whole building.
The little girl weakly coughed as the dark smog made its way into her lungs, messing with her ability to breath normally.
"Tanizaki!" Yosano shouted across the large room, sweatdrops rolling down her face. "Take her out of here! I'll look over the rest!"
The boy without hesitation rushed towards Yosano's direction. He couldn't see her though. Which way is she? It's too dark. The racks of half-burnt clothes didn't help either. The only way Tanizaki could determine where Yosano was was by her voice, so the only solution to get there fast was to call her out.
"Yosano-san! Where are you?!"
"This way!" the woman yelled, waving her hand, but the movement helped nothing.
Tanizaki took a turn to the racks, squinting his eyes and constantly turning his head left and right in hope of finding his colleague.
"Where?!"
No response. She can't hear him?
"Yosano-san!"
She didn't answer. Tanizaki was sure he can't yell louder than this.
"Where are you, Yosano-san?!"
He checked the area where the woman was originally supposed to look through. He rammaged through the several racks of pre-teen and child clothing, in fear Yosano might have collapsed from the heat. She might be unconsciously lying somewhere on the floor, waiting for a piece of burning fabric to fall on her and cover her in flames.
Tanizaki panicked. He started running around and shouting around to find the two he was looking for, as the fire almost reaching his back each time he went back to between the isles of clothing. He had no idea where he was. The orange haired boy has never been here before.
And probably never will after this.
But since Tanizaki wasn't a returning customer in this exact store, he didn't know, if it was normal, to find a weirdly placed door on the most random part of the whole store.
He didn't really see the door, he just felt the handle on the wall, and assumed it was an entrace for something. Or an emergency exit. Trying to stay positive, the thought, that Yosano and the girl have already found this door and went through passed his mind, which made him a bit relieved, but still not entirely. After all, he was not sure whether his theory was correct. All that was left, is to check what's inside.
