"Shit, I'm already late on the first day," Yuka muttered to herself, speeding up into a sprint towards the looming building. She ran past the gate, her white backpack bouncing up and down as she leaped up the stairs in twos. Her heart was pounding in exhileration and fear as she adjusted her new UA uniform as she sprinted.
"Class 1-A, where is Class 1-A?" she mumbled, scanning the halls for any signs. Her first day at U.A. High School, and she was already late. Not the best impression to make.
Then she saw a large brown door with the words "1-A" printed on it.
"It's so tall," she gasped. Calming her nerves, she put her hands on the door, hearing the murmuring of a class on the other side.
Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open and stepped inside. The classroom was already filled with students, their chatter dying down as they noticed the newcomer.
She felt all eyes on her, a mixture of curiosity and judgment.
"Late on the first day?" a monotone voice called out. At the front of the room, a man with unkempt hair and a perpetual tired look was lounging in a yellow sleeping bag.
"Sorry, sir," Yuka muttered, bowing slightly. "It won't happen again."
"See that it doesn't," Aizawa Shota, their homeroom teacher, replied, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Find a seat."
Yuka's eyes scanned the room for an empty seat, and that's when she saw him. Shoto Todoroki, sitting near the back, his gaze fixed on his desk. Her heart clenched painfully at the sight of him. A year had passed since their painful breakup, but the wounds still felt fresh.
To her dismay, the only empty seat was right next to Todoroki. She hesitated for a moment, feeling her heart pound in her chest. She took a deep breath and made her way toward the empty seat, every step feeling heavier than the last.
As she reached the seat, Todoroki glanced up briefly, his eyes widening in surprise before quickly returning to their usual cold demeanor. She sat down beside him, her heart aching at the cold distance between them.
Memories hit her like a tidal wave, drowning her in nostalgia of when times were better. When she was with him.
Words that they'd whispered to each other during classes, gifts he'd give her when he picked her up for school; it all came rushing back to her in terrifying clarity.
"We'll enter UA together," they had promised that one night, their fingers intertwined.
Though the possibility had crossed her mind, she didn't t really consider the fact that Shoto Todoroki had also gained admission.
Of course he did. He had one of the most powerful quirks she'd seen.
He noticed that she looked different, though it had only been a year. Her previously short blonde hair had grown longer and now flowed freely in slight waves. She didn't seem to have the spunk or the energy she did a year earlier. She seemed calmer, more grounded. Her eyes, where there had once been a bright sparkle had dimmed by the losses she had suffered.
