Y/n was sitting in the parlor, her back against the arm rest of the couch as she read a book. Or at least she tried to. It was difficult focusing on it when her mind was racing.
Her eyes were growing heavy, but the pain in her heart and stomach kept her awake, her hand slightly shaking as she turned the page. The woman kept nodding off, snapping her head right back up to focus on the words. With her mind running though, she couldn't.
"Y/n?"
The younger woman was snapped out of her thoughts, looking over to see the headmistress by the door way, confused to see her still awake. Her hair was undone and her nightgown was on, y/n assuming she had woken up and was going to make tea.
"Why are you up still?" She questions, raising an eyebrow and the younger woman immediately set her book down on the nightstand and went to stand up.
"I'm sorry, I can go back upstairs."
"No, it's alright. I was just wondering." The ravenette says, stopping her before she left. The woman glanced at her for a second before sitting back down, watching her leave to the kitchen. A few moments later, she heard the kettle and assumed her theory was right.
Y/n tried diving back into her book, her eyes starting to hurt and grow strained from just the dim light of the lamp and her exhaustion was pulling her under, but she didn't want to sleep. Not yet at least.
Thankfully Miss Peregrine had returned, the woman noticing she had two cups instead of just one for herself. The ymbryne carefully set down on the other end of the couch, handing the one cup to y/n who quickly set her book back down to take it.
"Thank you, miss." She says softly and the older woman glanced at her before taking a sip of her tea.
"You can call me Alma, dear. It's just the two of us." The ravenette says, y/n sending her a small smile.
"Alright."
"Is there a reason you're still awake? It's awfully late." Alma asks softly, moving her gaze to meet hers. She grew confused though when y/n didn't seem to hear her, her gaze zoning off to the cup after she took a small sip. "Is the tea alright?"
"Hm? Oh yeah, it is." She replies, managing a small smile and set her cup down on the nightstand, rubbing her forehead for just a second to attempt to wake herself.
"If you're tired dear, you can go lay down." The ymbryne says, observing the bags under her eyes and it was obvious she was trying to stay awake.
"No, it's fine. Why are you awake?" She asks and Alma raised an eyebrow.
"You still didn't answer me when I asked."
"You didn't. Did you?"
"I did, but it seems you didn't hear me."
"I'm sorry, I just have stuff on my mind." Y/n replies, her gaze moving to the floor before meeting Alma's. "What about you?"
"Same reason." Was the only thing she said, not further explaining.
A silence fell over the two, the ymbryne taking an occasional sip of her tea and her blue eyes darted right back to the woman when she began dozing off. With her free hand, she gently resting it against her thigh, gaining her attention and waking her.
"Sorry, did you say something?" Y/n asks when she jumped awake, wanting to not be rude and ignore her.
"You should go lay down."
"It's fine." She replies tired, though she was already struggling to keep her eyes open, nodding off once more.
"Y/n, go rest." Alma says, her tone gentle yet firm, her hand still resting on her thigh and rubbing gentle circles against the fabric.
"I can't." Y/n says, a chill running through her from the breeze outside, the ravenette noticing it too.
"Why not?"
"I don't want to be alone in my head." She says simply, Alma growing a bit concerned but instead she set her tea down on the nightstand. The older woman stood, leaving the parlor and y/n tiredly looked over at the doorway, a bit guilty that she had made her leave. That is, until she seen the headmistress return, this time with a blanket.
"What are you doing?" The younger woman asks, looking up at her as she sat down next to her.
"Well if you wouldn't like to be alone, I don't see any harm trying to rest downstairs while I'm awake." She says, bringing the blanket over the younger woman and motioning her to her lap. The younger woman blushed, her cheeks a faint pink and Alma raised a questioning eyebrow at the hesitation.
"I don't want to keep you awake."
"How could you if you'll be asleep?" Alma retorts, her blue eyes looking deeply into hers and y/n glanced down for a moment, her cheeks burning at the thought of laying in her lap.
"It won't be comfortable for you to sit there all night." Y/n mentions.
"Who says I won't be?" The ravenette says, a small smile hiding behind her lips and y/n felt herself give in. "Come sit." She says, gently patting her lap.
The younger woman moved over to where she was sitting, resting her head carefully against her thigh and felt the ymbryne bring the blanket over her, another draped around Alma's shoulders.
"You're sure?" Y/n asks, though was cut off by a small yawn, her eyes already begging to shut, especially when the ymbryne began running her talons through her hair.
"Absolutely, dear."
"I'm sorry."
"There's nothing to be sorry for."
"I don't like being alone."
"I'll be here for you."
"It feels like my thoughts are consuming me lately." Y/n admits, her voice growing hush as exhaustion took over her.
"So let me be your distraction." The headmistress says, her voice soft and caring. She seen y/n was already almost fast asleep, her talons still running through her hair and brushing away a stray tear that had made it's way down the woman's cheek.
"Thank you." Y/n whispers. Soon after she was fast asleep.
"Anytime, my love." Alma says quietly, her tone caring but a small twinge of sadness as the woman hadn't heard her.
