Y/n made her way slowly down to the casket that still rested open for everyone to say their goodbyes. She was going to make her way back home two days ago, to head back to the loop, to see Alma and the children again, but then she was held back. Her mother had passed. The only person she thought she had left. Her father was already gone, her grandparents, everyone. She only had her mother and now, she too, has left her.

Her goodbyes were short, not because she didn't care, but trying to speak while facing her dead mother was difficult, especially when her throat kept closing up everytime she went to say something. So y/n left, her sobs being the only thing heard from the people who remained as she rushed out the door, fearing if she stayed there any longer she would suffocate. She didn't head to her home though, instead heading towards the shoreline that lined the beach of Wales and the rocky edges that held the caves, not caring that it would be well past when Alma made dinner. Y/n didn't bother trying to make her appearance look great, too distraught and trying to breathe properly as her chest started heaving from her cries. She ran into the cave, suddenly faltering when she felt her ears pop, falling to her knees as the tears ran down her cheeks and she tried to catch her breath. Her hands moved up to tug at her hair, trying to get herself composed as she blinked away the black spots that swam in her vision, trying not to faint from her rapid breathing.

Y/n let out an angry shout that was cut off harshly by a sharp gasp, her nails digging into the skin of her arms, trying to snap out of the grief she felt. But it didn't work. Her sobs echoed in the cave, almost taunting her as each one sent what felt like a knife through her chest.

Y/n missed her family so terribly, she hated her peculiarity for the reason. She should have known that her grieving would never end, that she would witness every single death in her family until the very last one. She was immortal and she hated every second of it. She wanted to spend each passing moment with her family, but how can one do that when they're all gone? When she was the only one left and would be forever alone?

"Are you alright?"

Y/n immediately looked up when she heard the oh so familiar voice, a part of her relieved when she seen the ravenettes indigo eyes find her. Realization fell over the older woman's face when she seen who it was, even through the dark moonlight and she didn't hesitate to walk over to her, sitting on the heels of her feet to look over her.

"Y/n?" Alma says softly, the woman letting out a quiet sob and immediately falling into the headmistress' arms. She didn't hesitate to return it, noticing how cold the woman's hands were and gently wiped her tears away despite more falling. "Let's get you out of the cold." She says quietly, carefully helping her up from the ground, her hands falling to her waist to keep her steady. Y/n didn't get far though with her when she suddenly brought her arms around her, hugging her so close, worried that if she let go she too would leave her just as everyone else.

"Y/n, darling, it's alright." She says softly, running her talons through her hair with a worried sigh, looking over the woman's distraught expression. "Here, this will be much easier for the both of us." She says quietly, y/n not caring when she felt the woman's arm under her legs, the other supporting her back as she easily lifted her up, holding her close against her as she made her way back to the home. Y/n gave up scolding herself for her terrible appearance, too tired and hurt to even both wiping away the tears that trailed down her cheeks as she layed her head against Alma's shoulder, trying to settle herself.

"The children are upstairs in their rooms, I recommend you get some rest yourself." The ymbryne says, slight authority in her voice but nonetheless was gentle and concerned.

"No, please." The woman cried, her hold still on the woman and Alma couldn't help her worry from showing as she carried the woman into the parlor, carefully setting her down on the sofa. "Please don't leave." Y/n manages to rasp out between her quiet sobs, the ymbryne pulling away to gently brush away her tears that shined against the light from the fireplace.

"I'm not leaving, dear." Alma says softly, her palms resting against her cheeks as y/n finally met her eyes, the beautiful blue ones gazing back at hers that were bloodshot from the never ending tears that fell down her cheeks.

"What happened?" She asks quietly, brushing her back out of her face to look over her. "Did someone hurt you?"

Y/n just shook her head, leaning against the woman's hands as her head grew heavy from the sobs that ran through her, her nails digging into her wrist again and Alma noticed. Her hand moved from her cheek down to take hers, allowing the woman to rest her forehead against her shoulder as she cried against her, the ymbryne quietly comforting her as she did.

Eventually her tears ran dry, no more left for her to cry. Y/n tried to focus on the woman's hands, the one that held her hand close and the other that traced against her back. She was so tired and hurt, her chest wouldn't stop aching as she thought back to the funeral, shutting her eyes to try and drown out the noise but to no avail.

"Why don't you try laying down?" Alma offers, her voice so soft that it only made y/n's heart ache more and she wasn't quite sure why.

"No, I can't." The younger woman whispers, her tears threatening to show until the ravenette spoke up.

"It's okay, I won't make you." She says, wiping away her tears. Y/n glanced away for a moment and the woman had stood, about to walk away when the woman quickly brought her arms around her waist, surprising the headmistress.

"Please don't leave me too. Please." Y/n says quickly, her voice cracking terribly on her last plea and Alma gently pushed her back by her shoulders, sending her a sympathetic look.

"I'm just going to get you a blanket, dear." She says softly, her eyes looking over her. "I'll be back, I promise."

"She promised me the same thing." Y/n retorts, the waver in her voice sending a pain in the older woman's chest. Alma sighed, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek.

"I promise I will be back, nothing could ever make you lose me." She says, her voice hush and delicate, a faint pink dusting over her cheeks but y/n didn't notice as she watched the ymbryne leave the parlor.

Y/n moved closer to the back of the couch, noticing how shaky she was when she attempted to and stayed put, glancing around the home. Nothing much has changed since she was last here, though she wasn't quite surprised. She knew how Alma was with keeping things the same and consistent.

"Here."

Y/n looked up and seen the ymbryne step back into the room, surprised her when she gently wrapped the blanket around her shoulders, her face only inches from hers when she did. The younger woman didn't quite understand why her heart was beating so quickly and why her cheeks burned brightly, but didn't pay much mind to it when Alma sat back down beside her.

"Would you like to talk about what happened?" The older woman says, her voice hush as she didn't want to intrude too much on the woman. Y/n glanced at her and then back to the floor, the tears from earlier building in her eyes and Alma felt a bit of guilt tear through her, not wanting to upset her more. "I'm sorry, dear."

"No, it's fine." Y/n says, her voice shaky as she shut her eyes to soothe the burning in them. Alma noticed how exhausted she seemed to be and moved further up on the couch, her hand faintly brushing against y/n's.

"Do you want to lay down?" After a moment of hesitation, y/n gave in and moved over to fall into her arms. Alma held her close, resting her head against her shoulder as she layed back on the arm of the couch, y/n on top of her. Her talons traced a few small circles against the fabric of the woman's shirt, each one seeming to ease some of the tension from her shoulders.

Y/n's eyes terribly wanted to shut, tired from the day and the never ending tears that burned her eyes as each one fell. She wanted to talk to Miss Peregrine more, to tell her what has happened so she had someone to vent to, but she was much more tired than compelled to do so. She didn't even remember closing her eyes and falling asleep as the ymbryne ran her talons through her hair.

Just like how her mother used to.
