Y/n was up late pacing the kitchen, her breathing heavy and forcing herself to take deep breaths as she felt tears prick her eyes. She kept pacing and pacing, not being able to sit down as her chest struggled to take any air. The woman leaned over the sink, her head in her hands that yanked on her hair, her breathing a bit loud as she tried to take a single breath but found it difficult as more tears built. Her hands shook when she tried to drink some water and her head felt light as she tried to push it away.

"Come on, deep breaths." She scolds herself, her voice a quiet whisper and she took another panicked breath in. "Stop it, stop it, you idiot stop." She says, her hands tugging on her hair as she tried to regain her breathing. Her heart was racing so quickly that she stumbled for just a moment, her hands gripping on to the edge of the sink until her knuckles turned a pale white.

Y/n decided to finally sit down, taking a seat at the small table in the kitchen. It was the middle of the night and she needed to be quiet.

The palms of her hands pressed against her forehead to try and soothe the light feeling she felt, her breathing only quickening and she stood up once more finding it difficult to sit still.

This time the woman paced to the parlor, her hand rubbing against her collar bone and tugging slightly at her button up, feeling too overwhelmed and unsure how to handle it.

Not knowing what else to resort to, she layed down on her side by the fireplace, distracting herself by watching each flame closely, but it didn't calm her breathing. Her heart rate too was not cooperating and felt like it could burst at any moment. Instead she felt herself burst into tears, her breathing quick as sobs racked her body, struggling to force herself to stop.

"Stop it, stop it." She whispered to herself, angry for losing it but too upset to stay like that.

She curled up against herself, her knees up to her stomach and her hand running nervously through her hair as she tried to look at the flames again, but her tears had blurred them too much.

Because of all the noise running through her head, she didn't hear the soft sound of Miss Peregrine's heels. The ymbryne assumed everyone was asleep, wanting to take a small midnight fly. That is, until she seen something move in the parlor from the corner of her eye.

Alma moved her gaze over and felt a slight twinge of panic in her chest for a moment when she seen someone lying in front of the fireplace. Confused and worried, she slowly walked up behind the person, noticing it was y/n when she heard her mumble to herself.

"Y/n?"

"I'm fine, I'm fine." She repeats, burying her face in her hands and her nails dug into her hair.

"Hey, it's alright." Alma says softly, kneeling down beside her and gently taking her hand and brushing her hair back with her talons. "Dear, what's wrong?"

"I don't know." She manages, her breathing labored as more tears fell.

"Here, let's go sit." The ymbryne says gently. Her taloned hand left her hair and took her other hand, helping her sit up and then stand. Y/n tried wiping her tears away, but only more fell, her breathing uneven as the older woman walked her over to the couch.

"Is there something bothering you?" She asks, not bothered at all when the woman's head rested against her shoulder.

"I don't know." She whispers, her hands shaking badly and it didn't go unnoticed, Alma carefully bringing her hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"That's okay." She says softly, her thumb running across the top of her hand. "Just take a few deep breaths, I'll go make us some tea if you'd like?"

Y/n nodded and let go of her, Miss Peregrine hesitating for just a second before letting go of her hand and leaving the room. The woman shut her eyes and buried her head in her arms, trying to stable herself while she was gone. She brought her legs back up to her chest, running her hand through her hair and frowning when she felt a few strands come out.
