Y/n was busying herself by the sink, scrubbing rather firmly on a plate as she felt an odd but familiar bout of annoyance creep into her. There wasn't any rhyme or reason to it, she just felt irritable and that only made her more upset with herself.

The children were thankfully getting ready for bed, leaving her alone to think as so much was ringing through her head.

When she finished the last plate, she dried it and forced herself to be gentle when she set it down in the cabinet.

"Y/n, aren't you heading off to bed?"

Y/n recognized the voice and felt her cheeks burn slightly, an odd feeling stirring in her chest but her tone came out annoyed.

"I'm not tired." The woman says, her voice firm as she dried off the counter and set the rag aside.

"You didn't lay down last night." The ymbryne comments, her voice calm and gentle.

"If I'm tired, I'll go to bed when needed. I'm perfectly fine." Y/n snaps, her gaze conflicted as so many thoughts ran through her head, giving her a headache in return.

Alma watched her closely by the doorway, letting out a small sigh before walking over beside her. She went to reach out and take her hand, but y/n pulled away, her cheeks burning and she wasn't quite sure why.

"Y/n, it's okay." Alma says softly, but the woman only backed off even further. "What has you upset?"

"I don't know. I never do." The woman says, frankly annoyed with herself and it was coming off towards Alma instead. She went to walk out of the kitchen, confused and irritable, needing to think for a moment without an audience.

How could she do that? She just wants to tell her she loves her, but why can't she feel less..overwhelmed? Irritated? It was being irrational for no reason.

The ymbryne watched her closely as y/n paved the parlor, clearly her mind racing. The ravenette had soon understood about the woman's issues, knowing she struggled with controlling her emotions. Especially her anger. Alma wanted to help, but it was hard when y/n kept pushing her away.

The headmistress let out a small sigh, walking over to the parlor, her heels tapping quietly against the hard wood floor. She reached out to take the woman's hand when y/n suddenly yanked it away with a glare, tears building in her eyes from the overwhelming feelings that rushed through her and the ymbryne only increased them. God how she hated seeing the obvious concern on Alma's face, knowing she was the cause of it.

"Don't touch me." She snaps, leaving to go to her bedroom.

Y/n woke up at some point during the night from a strange dream. Slowly sitting up in bed, she rubbed her eyes with a sigh, glancing at the time.

2:08.

The woman let out a small groan, knowing it would be a restless night for her. She felt her way out of bed, originally planning to head down stairs for a while when she stopped short in front of Alma's room. The light was still on.

Y/n glanced at the door knob, deciphering whether to open it or force herself to go back down stairs. She hesitated for a moment, rapping lightly on the ymbrynes door.

"Come in."

At the reply she earned, she slowly opened the door, noticing the headmistress' gaze was already on her.

"I couldn't sleep." Y/n says quietly, shutting the door behind her and hovering by the wall for a moment.

"You can come sit with me. I don't bite." Alma says softly, her lips curving into a slight smile. Y/n met her gaze and felt her cheeks burn slightly, but didn't hesitate and walked over to the edge of the ymbrynes bed.

"Make yourself comfortable." She says with a warm look, y/n glancing at her before managing a small smile, sitting down next to her. She was unsure about what to do, glancing around the room while Alma continued to read.

"Something on your mind?"

"Hm?" Y/n hums, glancing over and seeing Alma's gaze pointed on her. "No, I'm alright." The woman watched as the ravenette set her book aside on the nightstand and pulled the covers up over them, y/n surprised when she felt her be pulled into the warmth of her touch. Alma said nothing as she pulled her into her arms, her chest pressed against her back when she did and y/n started feeling that familiar leap in her chest at the action.

"Relax, it's just you and I." The ravenette says softly, the woman finally giving into her gentle touch, her tension leaving as she rested against her. The ymbryne was gentle as she ran her talons across her back, y/n letting out a content sigh as she felt her irritation from earlier leave.

"I'm sorry for shouting at you." Y/n whispers, feeling the older woman pull her closer by the waist, her hands resting on top of the ymbrynes.

"Don't apologize. You know I'm willing to help you in any way I can." Alma says softly, her breath hitting the younger woman's neck.

That morning Alma woke up with a small stretch, slowly opening her eyes and was surprised to not see the other woman next to her. The bed was empty and she glanced over to check what time it was, noting it was the usual time she woke. Y/n must have left early.

She had to take a double take though when she seen the small vase of flowers that were sitting by the lamp. Confusion swept over her until Alma spotted the note underneath it, quickly sitting up to pick the small card up.

The ymbryne perched on the edge of the bed as she read over the words, recognizing it was y/n's hand writing.

I'm not so great with words, but you know how meaningful the garden is to me. Look at the flowers.
                   -Y/n

Alma moved her gaze from the card to the vase, noticing the red roses and lavender that were tied together in a bouquet. The ravenette felt her cheeks burn as she looked deeply at the flowers, her talon tracing down a rose petal as she remembered what y/n was telling her about not too long ago.

"Asters represent elegance and protection, sunflowers are for adoration or loyalty," y/n says, her voice gentle and light as she guided Alma's gaze to each flower in the garden. Both of them stopped walking when they reached the roses.

"Roses are the perfection of beauty. Romance." Y/n added with a small smile, sparing her ymbryne a glance. "And then lavender. Yet another that symbolizes love."

The older woman felt her cheeks turn a faint pink as she recounted their conversation. She originally thought nothing of how y/n spoke or looked at her. She was too stuck on how comfortable and happy y/n was when talking about plants. It wasn't only because it's her peculiarity, it was a hobby that Alma was more than happy to listen to her talk about. Since it made y/n happy, that was all she needed to make herself feel content.

The ymbryne snapped out of her thoughts, glancing at the note and flowers once more, a smile forming on her lips.
