Y/n gazed down at the floor as she sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers digging into the sheets as she felt the intense weight of what she was about to do. Miss Peregrine had just said good night, done tucking the children in and it's been at least an hour since she assumed she went to bed. The feeling in her wrist grew to her chest, needing some sort of outlet and felt overwhelmed by the sudden thought. She had a weapon with her, she could so easily do it. Did she want to though? Cause such pain to the others in the household for one selfish act? But she wanted to, so so badly. She needed to.

"I'm so sorry." She sobbed, tears running down her cheeks as she glanced at the written letter she had placed on her night stand. Her last goodbye.

She slowly stood from her bed, keeping her cries silent in order not to wake anyone, she didn't need disrupted when she finally had the chance. Opening the drawer of her night stand, the woman slowly took out the pistol, feeling the cool metal against her fingertips and took a shaky breath in. Slowly taking the weapon from the stand, she held it in her hands, y/n's gaze moving from the gun to the windows, her vision blurry with tears.

"I'm so sorry." She whispers, knowing the pain it would cause the peculiars to know. The grief it would cause Alma. But this was her chance, her moment to finally do it, why was she hesitating now? She just needs to do it, forget all of her worries, forget the haunting memories that stain her mind and finally be free from it all.

Y/n took a choked breath in, slowly raising the pistol, feeling the metal against the side of her forehead, letting out a shaky breath. Her finger hesitated on the trigger, a strange tightness in her chest as she realized what she was doing. Did she still want this? Why was she now backing out? It would be better, right? The woman shut her eyes with a frustrated noise, shaking her head slightly as she set down ok the bed, sitting the pistol on top of the blankets.

"Just do it, stop it, stop." She sobbed quietly, her cries choked from the resistance she put against them. Angrily wiping away her tears, she quickly grabbed the gun, raising it to her head once more, her finger on the trigger when she suddenly heard footsteps coming to her door. Y/n froze in her spot, unable to even breathe when she recognized the familiar heels.

"Y/n, come on." She cried, applying some pressure on the trigger, wanting to end it before the ymbryne appeared but it was too late. Her door opened and immediately she felt talons rip the weapon away from her hold, y/n not even fighting.

"Miss-"

"No! Absolutely not!" The woman snapped, y/n flinching at her tone. "You will not-" She cut herself off, her voice cracking and trying to compose herself. "No, no-never, y/n." She says firmly, her hand holding the woman's gaze to hers by her jaw.

"I'm sorry-"

"Promise me you will never, ever, do that again!" The headmistress says, her gaze and tone firm, but the tears building in her eyes gave away her concern.

"Alma, I..." Y/n trailed off, unsure how she could promise her such a thing and Alma noticed, not helping the tear that fell down her cheek, but she didn't look away. Almost as if the woman would disappear under her hold if she did.

"Y/n, please." She whispers, her voice too weak to keep the authority in, her hands cupping the woman's face as she looked down at her, silently pleading with her. Y/n couldn't help the tears that compiled in her own eyes, nodding against her ymbrynes hold.

"I promise." Y/n says quietly, her voice cracking and felt the ymbrynes arms quickly fall around her, hugging her incredibly close. Her talons dug slightly into y/n's nightgown, but she didn't mention it, leaning into the warmth of the headmistress and hearing how frantically her heart was beating. The older woman's hold didn't ease, tightening slightly as she held the woman close, both of them allowing their tears to finally run.

"You frightened me so incredibly bad." Alma whispers, her voice shaky and muffled as she held her tight, a quiet sob taking hold of her. "Please, never do that again."

--

Alma woke up abruptly, her heart racing and feeling her cheeks were drenched with tears, confusion filling her as she quickly set up in bed. Was that real? It felt so. But no, was she sleeping? Her heart began racing more as she thought over the nightmare, her shoulders shaking when a sudden silent sob took over her, a faint gasp heard from the older woman. Her legs moved up against her chest as she wiped her tears away despite more falling, quiet cries taking over her when she felt a hand rest on her lower back.

"Alma, what's wrong?"

The ravenette looked down and seen her lover in bed beside her, her eyes filling with relief but her tears did not stop as a small cry left her lips. Immediately the ymbryne moved down and fell into her arms, clinging on to her as if she would be gone the moment she let go. The dream felt all too real, Alma just wanting to make sure she was safe.

"What is it, Fay?" Y/n asks softly, propping herself up to get a better angle for the woman to move closer. Alma's side rested against her, her face buried in the crook of her neck as her talons dug into her slightly with each sob that left her. Her legs were curled up close to the woman, trying to close any space between them both as she held on to her.

"Fay?" Y/n says quietly, concern drifting into her eyes, any signs of her previous drowsiness leaving as she held the ravenette close.

"I almost lost you." Alma cried, her voice muffled by her nightgown, feeling her lips brush against her neck as she spoke. "I was so scared I lost you." A quiet sob left her, y/n gently rubbing her back to soothe the woman's nerves as she hung on to her.

"I'm right here, bluebird. I'm not going anywhere." Y/n assures her, placing a soft kiss on her cheek but the older woman didn't let go.

"It happened so long ago and I'm still so worried about losing you." The headmistress says, clearly not enjoying how vulnerable she felt in the moment, but her sobs couldn't be contained as she kept the woman captured in her arms, feeling her heart beat to assure her she was there with her.

"Hey it's okay, I'm right here." Y/n says softly, her touch soothing as she looked over the woman.

"Birds I was so worried about you." She whispers, her voice choked with tears and y/n only held her close against her, rubbing her hand against her back.

"It's okay, I'm okay and so are you." Y/n says softly.

Eventually the older woman settled down, nuzzling closer to the woman as she possibly could until she was finally content that y/n was there and not just a figment of her imagination. She was fine. Some of Alma's tension slipped away, her shoulders relaxing as she let out a shaky sigh, her breath hitting y/n's jawline and she let out a quiet thank you.

"I love you. Incredibly so." She whispers, sleep calling for her from the restless dream. Y/n smiled, leaning down and placing a soft kiss on her collarbone, the only place she could reach from how close the woman was.

"I love you too, Fay. Get some rest." She whispers, cradling the woman close against her as Alma dozed off, finally content.
