"Sweetheart," Katie said as she knocked on her daughters door. Lily looked up at her mother from her spot at her desk. "I wanted to give you something."
"Why didn't you just give it to me earlier at dinner?" Lily questioned.
"I wanted this to be between us because this gift is very special to our family. It's been passed down for generations from mother to daughter. Your grandmother gave me this same gift on my fifteenth birthday. I thought it was only fitting to give it to you on your fifteenth birthday." Katie explained to the now fifteen-year-old.
Katie took a seat across from her daughter on Lily's bed. She held a rectangular black box similar to one that would hold an expensive necklace. Lily spun around in her chair to face the older women. "Before I gave you this heirloom, I need you to understand the importance of it."
Lily nodded and gave all her attention to her mother. "This heirloom has been in our family since the 1500s. It was given to one of the first Carter women by her lover. My grandmother use to tell me the story of the two lovers when I was a kid. The women was going to wed to a prince in her kingdom, but she met a another man at her fifteenth birthday party. The two fell in love over time and planned to run away when tragedy struck."
Katie took a breath before continuing. "She found her lover dead killed by her brother." Lily gulped. "Her brother feared that she was being corrupted because of her love for the man. He believed that she was losing her place of being fit to rule the kingdom."
"It was a real life Romeo and Juliet." Lily stated. Katie nodded at the brunette. "What happened to the girl?" Lily questioned.
"She was overcome with grief. She destroyed her entire village and killed those that resided there." Lily's lips parted in surprise. "She felt betrayed. She had spent her life preparing for the moment she took over to rule and carry the kingdom to the future. Those that she was preparing to protect had now taken away her only happiness. In return, she took away all of their happiness."
"To protect the Carter's that came after her, she enchanted the necklace that she had gotten from her lover. She allowed the necklace to hold the souls of the Carter women to help protect the next generation. She vowed to never let another Carter women get hurt as she had." Katie finished.
Katie opened the box to reveal an antique ruby circular necklace. Lily starred in awe at the piece of jewelry. "It's beautiful," Lily admired. The jewel sparkled in the sunlight that flooded into the room from the bedroom window. "Wow."
