Cydo's pov
I woke to a knock at the door.
"Cydo? Could you come to the infirmary, please?" Dr. Smiley called out. I let out a sigh. Hopefully, nothing was wrong with Jack.
I got up and shook the dust from my hair and clothes. I probably should've shook out the blankets before going to bed last night. I didn't bother pulling my hair back or brushing it. I just left it a mess.
I stepped out the door and walked to the infirmary. It seemed further away today. I reached the door and opened it.
Jack was sitting up on the edge of the bed, looking much better. Ann sat next to him while Smiley stood leaning against the wall, arms folded. Dark Link seemed to have been dismissed since he was nowhere in sight.
I was excited that he looked better, but they didn't look as ecstatic, so I figured I'd stay calm and wait for the shoe to drop. I calmly walked over to them.
"Slender's father was here earlier and cleansed what he could. But I'm not completely clean yet. It's been slowly getting worse again." Jack began. My heart sank.
"But that's to be expected with these sorts of things. If he can't fix you completely, then it'll just increase again until it's back where you started. So before it gets to that point..." Smiley pulled up a chair and patted it. Motioning for me to sit before continuing.
"Cydo, dear. You'll be assisting me in some medicine making." I tilted my head in confusion.
"We've got plenty of antidotes, but since we don't know what you are, we don't know what kind we need. Or if we even have it. It's risky to just take a guess or attempt trial and error. So if we make it using your dna, that risk is lessened." Ann explained. I looked to Jack before sitting down.
"Just because we're using you, it doesn't remove the risk. So be prepared for whatever the outcome happens to be." Hearing Jack's words sucked, but I was more than willing. There was a possibility it could save him.
"Anything for my Jack."
"Then let's get started." Smiley held up a needle and scalpel, his mask raised so I couldn't see his mouth. No doubt he was smiling.
He took blood, a skin sample, and saliva from me before retreating to a corner of the room. It now had a light on, so it was brightly lit, unlike the rest of the dim infirmary. There was a desk and chair in the corner. The desk was full of books and lab equipment.
Smiley was working in the corner for hours, so Jack laid back down and read a book. I put my head down on the bed next to him, as Ann talked with him.
Eventually, Smiley asked for more samples. Something about it all dying before he could finish. I obligated and let him take more.
"Are you hungry, Cydo?" Ann asked. I was, but I wanted to stay here until Smiley finished.
"Go find you a partner and go hunt." Jack told me, I whined. "Go. Bring me back something while you're out."
My ears perked up. Was he hungry? Surely, they'd be feeding him. Or maybe they were out? I guess I have to go then. I nodded and walked out the door. I heard it lock behind me, and I realized. He was fine.
He made an excuse to make me go hunt.
I huffed and went to find one of the others to go with me. It was more enjoyable with someone else, I didn't like being alone anymore. Plus, I wasn't sure if I could get back here.
I bumped into a man, and he dropped a wind-up mouse. I picked it up and handed it to him. He had red hair and striking yellow eyes. I bowed my head in an apology.
"Why, thank you. Stupid idea to grab my mice, though. Common mistake for new kids. Name's Jason. Seedeater is out right now, and Jeff is still asleep. Jane is in her room right now if you'd like to go with her." The man told me. I was confused. How did he know what I was doing?
"I have eyes around the mansion. But don't worry, I don't do it to be gross. Filthy minds some have. I've been watching Jack. We're all worried, and only a few get updates. So, I try to calm their fears. It keeps issues from arising due to anxiety and worry." He smiled down at me.
"Forgive me for holding you. Jane's room is to the right, three doors down from here. I look forward to meeting you again, and Jack getting better." He waved goodbye before walking off. I just watched him for a minute before going to Jane's room.
That was weird.
