Chapter 31

Cydo's pov

I woke to the sound of a door closing softly. My ears perked up instantly, but I didn't want to move. So I couldn't hide.

Jack's hand rested in the crook of my neck, his breathing steady. He'd fallen asleep at some point. If I move, he might wake up. I don't want to disturb him. Who knows how much sleep he got last night.

I kept my eyes closed and acted like I was still asleep. I heard shuffling and walking, and I caught the scent of a male. He didn't come in for a bit and I relaxed. Until the footfall came closer.

"EJ, I've talked with Slender, and I'm sure you'd be happy to know that I believe I've found a cause to your-" I heard the curtain move, and knew that the person saw me.

"Or he might be very pissed..." the man muttered under his breath.

"Hm... I'm surprised he's asleep. Normally he needs help if he's not alone in his room. Oh well, guess I won't need this. I wonder if he got to sleep at all during the night..." the man said. I wondered if this was the 'Dr. Smiley' character Jack told me about.

The person continued about his business as he muttered to himself. I heard much shuffling and clinking. Perhaps moving his medical tools about. He'd better be quieter, I don't want him to wake Jack.

It wasn't long before he stopped, and I felt his gaze on me.

"There's no need to act, you don't have to be afraid. As long as you don't make his wounds worse, make a mess, or get in my way, I won't mind you being here. And I won't tell anyone." the man told me.

I opened my eyes to see a young man in a lab coat. He had short black hair and pale skin. A normal person might call him attractive. I could care less about his looks.

"You must be Cydo. The wonder that makes everyone curious. I see why. You're quite the specimen. Not just anyone can charm Eyeless Jack here." he said. I looked at Jack, who was still sleeping, and tilted my head slightly before giving the man a confused look. Uh... I'm sorry, charm?

"Don't worry, I know you won't speak. I'm too new to you. Quite a few of us were that way when we first came here. Name is Dr. Smiley, I'm sure Jack has told you?" the man said as he looked me over.

He didn't seem to want anything, but I could definitely sense his high level of curiosity. And interest of my species of course. Doesn't everyone want to know?

"I'm sorry to bother you, but we must get to know each other. I would be most interested in your abilities and capabilities. Of course Jack would have to come along as well. I'm sure if something happened he'd be a better match for you than I." Smiley said. Jack never told me he talked so damn much.

Smiley paused for a moment (thank god) and turned around to organize some things on a table. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly to relax myself. Smiley won't hurt me. I'll be safe.

I closed my eyes for a moment when Jack's hand clenched into a fist, scratching my neck in the process. I winced, feeling blood run down my neck as Jack's whole body tensed. He whined and I snapped my head up to look at him.

Smiley whipped around as Jack moved slightly, as if in discomfort. Yet I knew, this was different. Jack was having a nightmare. A bad one.

I could hear him grind his teeth together as he writhed, as though in pain. He moved more and I figured he might reopen his wounds. He needs to wake up.

"Cydo, let's see how strong you are. Get behind the head of his bed and grab his arms tight. But be careful of his injuries, we need to prevent him from injuring himself more than he already is." Smiley told me quickly, "Hold him down while I try to wake him up and keep him there. If not, he'll lash out."
