As soon as Tae and Josh left the restaurant, Kook's eyes became red, and the veins on his hand, which he had been holding for a long time, popping up with the grip on glass, might break soon.

Tae: "Ah. Josh, I will leave you can go ahead."
She says, waving at him near the dimly lit parking lot outside the restaurant.

Tae stands alone, leaning against her car, anxiously waiting for Kook. She wants to speak to him and make things clear, speak to him.

The cool night air does nothing to calm her racing heart. She sees Kook exiting the restaurant and walking with his female colleague.

Kook spots Tae and gently tells his colleague he’ll catch up later. The colleague leaves, and Kook approaches Tae with his usual unreadable expression.

Tae: "Hi."
She says so, trying to control her anxiety.

Kook: "Hi."
He replies to her expressionless nods slightly.

Tae: "How are you doing?"
She asks, trying to fill the silence and not suddenly jump into the main topic.

Kook: "Great."
He says in his monotone voice, with a shrug.

Tae: "Ah, good."
She says, forcing a small smile, but it doesn't reach her eyes, which Kook notices. She is happy that he is happy.

Kook: "How was your date?"
After a brief pause, Kook asks, as if he’s not interested].

Tae: "Huh—my da-te? Yeah, not so bad."
Catching her off guard, she stammers.

Kook: "How are you now?"
His eyes and voice were still unreadable.

Tae: "Not the worst, I guess."
She sighs, trying to hold herself together.

Kook: "How’s the baby, Dae?"
He briefly glances at her, then asks in the same flat tone.

Tae: "He’s fine—"
She says, her eyes widening slightly. She tries to explain quickly.

Kook: "And work? Everything good with the company?"
He asks, interrupting her.

Tae: "It's...busy, as always. But, Kook, about Dae...he's not—"
Her frustration starts to surface, and her voice shakes slightly.

Kook: "Do you still live in the same place?"
He cuts her off again, still maintaining his cold demeanour.

Tae: "Yes, I do. But listen, Kook, Dae isn’t my—"
Desperation starts to creep into her voice, tears brimming in her eyes.

Kook: "I have to go."
He says, looking away, his voice devoid of emotion.

Tae: "Kook, please, just...hear me out—"
Her voice cracks, almost pleading.

Kook: "Take care, Tae."
He gives her a final, emotionless glance, his tone detached.

Kook turns and walks away, his footsteps echoing in the quiet parking lot.

Tae stands frozen, her heart sinking as she watches him leave.

Tae's POV:

As Kook's figure fades into the darkness of the parking lot, Tae's heart aches with a familiar pain she thought had dulled over the years.

The cool night air feels heavy, pressing down on her chest, making breathing hard. She watched him leave, his back turned to her like he had four years before.

The tears she’s been holding back threaten to spill, but she forces them down.

She doesn't want to cry.
Not again.
Not before trying again.

The misunderstanding about Dae burns in her mind, the way Kook didn’t even give her a chance to explain again.

The coldness in his eyes, the detached tone in his voice—it’s as if the person she once loved is a stranger now.

But she can’t help but remember how he used to look at her, with warmth and affection, except for the weeks before their separation.

Those memories flood back, making the present reality all the more painful.

She leans against her car, feeling the weight of everything—her failed attempt to move on,
the loneliness that’s settled in her heart,
and the regret that she couldn’t make him stay,
that she couldn’t make him understand.

Her fingers curl into fists as she tries to steady herself.

Why did it have to be this way?
Why couldn’t he listen?

The night feels colder now, and as she finally slides into her car, the tears she’s been holding back begin to fall.

She grips the steering wheel, her head resting against it, feeling utterly alone.

Tae wonders if Kook will ever know the truth or if he’ll always see her through the lens of misunderstanding and past hurts.

The thought pierces her heart, and she can’t shake the feeling that she’s lost him all over again.

Kook's POV:

As Kook walks away from Tae, he keeps his face blank, his emotions locked tightly inside. Every step feels heavy, but he refuses to look back.

Seeing Tae again after all these years stirs up feelings he’s worked hard to bury. But he knows better than to let them surface.

The moment he saw her with that child, something inside him shut down, a protective wall rising to keep her and her career from getting hurt again.

He tries to focus on the present, on the life he’s built without her,
but
the sound of her voice,
the way she looked at him
the vulnerability in her eyes to make things right
the way she is trying to bring back everything to normal
—it all pulls at memories he’s tried to forget.

Memories of late-night conversations,
of the promises which they made,
of laughter,
of a time when things were simpler,
when they were happy.

But those days are long gone, and he reminds himself of that harsh truth.

The cold, clinical part of him, the part honed through years of medical training, tells him he did the right thing.

Distance is what he needs.
Distance will protect her.

But another part, buried deep, wonders what she was trying to say.

He thinks about how her voice shook, the desperation in her eyes as she tried to speak.

Was there something he missed?

He pushes the thought aside, convincing himself it doesn’t matter.
It’s better this way.
It is better to keep things simple and detached.

Kook doesn’t want to reopen old wounds or make room for new ones for both of them in the future.

But as he reaches his car and grips the steering wheel, a nagging thought lingers—what if he’s making a mistake?

He shakes his head, pushing the doubt away.

He tells himself it’s too late for second chances, that the person he was then isn’t who he is now.

But deep down, as he drives away, he can’t help but feel a hollow emptiness, a gnawing regret that maybe, just maybe, he should have listened a little longer.

But he also knew if he stayed there a bit longer, things might end up even worse.
