It was one of the fine afternoons when Tae was eating the food sent by Kook while going through some files.
She saw her mobile vibrating and picked it up after a few seconds because it was an unknown number.
But when she heard the voice from the other side, it felt like her world stopped for a few seconds.
Her dad had been admitted to the hospital.
She quickly grabbed her phone, blazer, and necessary things before rushing to Jimin, who was in the washroom, and told her about her father.
And she said she would go and that Jimin should take care of the meetings.
When she saw her father on the ventilator, she felt like she was all alone.
She saw him breathing through the oxygen mask, and after a few minutes, the doctor came out and said it wasn't anything serious, it was just due to stress.
Tae, even though it felt like everyone was choosing for her and was angry with him, couldn't leave her father behind when he was sick.
He was the only family she had.
And days passed. She started staying with him, even though he didn't speak much, she stayed overnight sometimes, and Jimin and Tae took turns whenever Tae felt too tired.
But she also made sure not to cross paths with Kook yet, because she wasn't ready to speak to him.
It was just another day for Kook as he was doing rounds in the hospital, looking and checking on the patients.
Chart.
Scan.
Update.
Repeat.Until he turned left on the 9th floor, VIP wing, and paused.
Kook looked at Mr. Kim and took in his features. He didn't know Mr. Kim was sick.
He looked different.
Tired.
Quiet.
Not the iron-jawed man who broke them.Jungkook could've turned around. He could've walked out like he didn't see. But instead, he stepped inside, clipboard still in hand.
Kook: "You're Mr. Kim, right? You've got a CT scheduled."
Mr. Kim blinked.
Almost like he didn't believe it, like he didn't expect this boy, no, this man, to stand there and look him in the eye.
But Jungkook just did his job.
He checked the lines.
Adjusted the monitor.
Fixed the cuff on his wrist. All calm.
All quiet. And Mr. Kim finally said it.
Mr. Kim: "I didn't expect you to speak to me. Not after everything."
His voice low and guilty.Jungkook didn't look up. He just nodded.
Jungkook: "I'm a doctor first."
Mr. Kim swallowed, his throat aching with a kind of guilt that words couldn't cover.
Mr. Kim: "I was wrong. I know that now."
Still no eye contact from Kook. He was just quiet.
But the kind of quiet that speaks louder than shouting.
Mr. Kim: "I lost my wife. I thought I was doing what was best to keep Tae safe. But I hurt her. And I hurt you."
After a long pause...
Jungkook finally looked up.
Kook: "She's not coming back to me."
He said the truth, the one that's been bleeding in his chest since that night.Mr. Kim's eyes watered.
Kook: "I broke her. You helped. But I let it happen. I didn't fight loud enough."
Kook: "Now, I just try. That's all I can do."
Mr. Kim just nodded, like he didn't have the right to say more, but something in him softened.
A long beat of silence, and then,
Mr. Kim: "Will you call me 'uncle' again? Just once?"
That made Jungkook pause. He blinked slowly. Cause he knew calling him Uncle means going back to the old times when they are all happy and together.
Jungkook: "Uncle."
He said it quietly.Mr. Kim: "My daughter isn't easy to get. You know that?"
Jungkook: "Yeah. I once had her. And I gave her up because of us."
He said with a soft laugh.Mr. Kim looked away.
That hurt.
That line.He felt it settle in his bones, but he nodded and reached for Jungkook's hand.
Mr. Kim: "All the best. Don't stop trying."
Kook: "I know. I just hope it's not too late."
He said, giving a weak smile.
Eyes misty.
Nose red.
But he took a step back, ready to leave. And then, the door clicked. Both of them turned.
Tae.
Just standing there, bag in her hand. Hair tied in a bun. Eyes wide. Hurt. Tired. Stunned.
She was supposed to be out. She planned her visits carefully, just to avoid Jungkook.
But today... she came early.
And she heard everything.
Every word.
"She's not coming back to me."
"I gave her up because of us."
"Uncle."Her mouth didn't move.
Her eyes didn't blink.Jungkook froze, just like her.
Like they were two statues trapped in the same aching silence.
But her gaze... it softened.
Not forgiven.
Not healed.
But shaken.Because he didn't say those things to her, he said them to the man who nearly ruined them both.
And that mattered.
Maybe too much.
Maybe just enough.Tell me how it was...
Stay tuned 😁😁
