I'm exhausted as I lie here in bed, listening to the familiar sound of my two-month-old daughter, Demi, crying in the other room. I glance over at Charlie who is sound asleep next to me. I nudge him gently with my elbow, but he doesn't stir. I sigh and reach for the pillow next to me, gripping it tightly.
"Charlie," I whisper, shaking him gently. "Charlie, Demi's crying."
But Charlie just mumbles something incoherent and rolls over, leaving me to deal with the crying baby on my own. I grit my teeth, wincing at the soreness that still lingers from childbirth. I'm too tired and sore to get out of bed, but I don't have a choice. Demi needs me.
I take a deep breath and hurl the pillow at Charlie with all the strength I can muster. It hits him square in the face, jolting him awake.
"What the-" he sputters, rubbing his eyes.
"Demi's crying," I repeat, my voice laced with frustration. "I can't get out of bed. You need to go take care of her."
Charlie blinks at me for a moment, then nods, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to fall back asleep," he says, running a hand through his messy hair.
I watch as he stumbles out of the room, still half-asleep, and makes his way to the nursery. I hear him cooing to Demi, trying to soothe her back to sleep. I sigh with relief, grateful that I have someone to help me during this exhausting phase of motherhood.
As I lie there, listening to the sounds of Charlie and Demi in the other room, I can't help but feel a mix of emotions. There's the exhaustion, of course, but also the joy of being a mom and the love I feel for my little family. I know that these sleepless nights won't last forever, and that soon enough, Demi will be sleeping through the night. But for now, I'll take all the help I can get – even if it means hitting Charlie with a pillow to wake him up.
A few minutes later, Charlie comes back into the room, looking refreshed and alert. He climbs back into bed next to me and wraps his arms around my shoulders.
"Thanks for taking care of her," I murmur, snuggling closer to him.
"No problem," he says, kissing the top of my head. "I'm here to help you in any way I can."
We lie there in the darkness, listening to the sound of Demi's soft breathing as she sleeps. I feel a sense of peace wash over me, knowing that I have Charlie by my side. We're in this together, and we'll get through these exhausting newborn days one day at a time.
"I love you," I whisper to Charlie, my eyes heavy with sleep.
"I love you too," he replies, his voice sleepy and content.
And with that, we drift off to sleep, ready to face whatever the next day brings – together.
