Chapter 38
You barely touched me.

Yakuza Village, Tokyo
Kali's house

Kali froze after his sweet peck. Her heart was still pounding from the sudden harsh question. "No, Ian... What is it?" she asked him, but he ignored her and walked to the bathroom. She heard him undress and started the shower. She sat on her bed, staring at the void and hearing his question repeatedly. She was already ready for bed and would hate messing with her creams, but she couldn't help herself.

Kali opened the bathroom door halfway. "Ian..."

"Go to bed, Kali," he said without looking at her.

She stared at him as he rested his arm on the shower wall. What a sight he was. "I'm... You told me you'd hide less things from me now... Your dark side..." she reminded him.

Ian finally looked at her, his damp hair sticking to his forehead. He pushed it back, displaying his forehead with frowned eyebrows. "I said, go to bed. I'll join you."

"No. I want to talk now," Kali said, crossing her arms.

With a swift and controlled movement, Ian grabbed his towel, wrapping it around his waist, eyes laying on her. "Now, huh?" he clicked his tongue, turning off the water.

Kali praised herself for not melting from his hot glare and naked glory. She stood tall, still offended and confused. "Why would you suddenly ask me that?" She tried to decipher the switch in his eyes.

Ian stepped out of the shower, brushing past her. He grabbed another towel and put it on his head. "I needed to know..." he started drying his hair, dismissing her.
     "What for?"
     "Because."
     "Ian!"
"Kali." His voice was calm and deep.

She grew increasingly frustrated. She mentally counted to ten and took a deep breath. Obviously, her aggressive approach wasn't working. She needed to switch strategies. She walked closer to him and stood behind him. She wrapped her arms around his middle and hugged his back. "Please, talk to me..."

Ian paused his hair-drying session, sighing. "You wouldn't betray the clan for me... Would you betray me for the clan?" he asked.

Kali shook her head. "I wouldn't either..." she tried to ease his mind. She thought he was having a paranoia episode or something close. "I'm not like that..."

Ian gently turned around, cupping her face with his hand. She smiled up at him, feeling like he was calmer. But Ian only tightened his grip on her face. "Then, Kali..." he started, his hand sliding down to her throat, squeezing it tightly. "Would you kindly tell me why you're doing it for Akui?"

Kali's heart dropped. Her eyes widened, and she stared up at Ian, legitimately scared of him for the first time. "It's... not..."

"Would you tell me why you're ready to lose your brother's fucking trust for a man you don't know?" he asked, tone cold and lips thinned in a line. "It just doesn't click, Kali. It doesn't. Do you even know half of the mess you just made?"

Kali shook her head. "I'm- Who... Who told you?"

Ian finally dropped her, sliding his hand through his hair again. He looked away, attempting to cool down. "Your staff doesn't work for you. They work for your brother. Noda and Mitsuya snitched." Kali held her sore throat, glaring at him. She was about to speak when Ian lifted his hand. "Shut it..." he groaned in frustration. "Your best friend Akui is making Kazuo look so bad that he won't be able to link with me anymore. If they can't trust you, why would they trust me? Huh? And if they can't trust me, how will I get what I want?" The what being Kali.
