Authors note: There are two songs that I feel fit this chapter. The first is Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin, which speaks to Juliette's perspective. Dear Agony (Aurora Version) by Breaking Benjamin and Lacey Sturm is what I imagine would be playing from Anne's perspective.

When angels fall with broken wings

I can't give up, I can't give in

When all is lost and daylight ends

I'll carry you and we will live forever

Forever

Summer, 1894

Juliette POV

Beads of sweat cascaded down my forehead as I hunched over a cauldron in the humid Sallow kitchen. Summer had returned to Scotland in full force and I had spent most of it inside, perfecting Anne's cure.

The kitchen was in complete disarray. I had dirtied just about every dish and the countertops were littered with various ingredients that were known to have healing properties. Unicorn tail hair, wormwood, dragon's liver. Anything I could get my hands on.

My connections at the ministry were starting to work in my favor, as well, gaining me access to rare ingredients I otherwise could not afford.

Thankfully, Sebastian was working late at the Auror office, so I could work on the potion without any... distractions. It also spared him from seeing his childhood home plunged into chaos.

My entire face scrunched in concentration as I stirred the thick, bubbling greyish-blue liquid, at a slow and steady pace. I reviewed the steps in my head:

5 minutes of stirring.

Infuse the dragon's liver with Ancient Magic.

Add the dragons liver.

Then 5 more minutes of stirring.

The wooden floorboards creaked under Anne's feet as she joined me at my side with a cup of tea. I did not turn to face her, lest I lose focus, but I could see her concerned expression from the corner of my eye as she peered into the cauldron.

"Juliette, dear, it doesn't even look drinkable anymore."

"It's not done, but it's going to work. I can feel it this time!"

She set my tea on the counter and put her hand over mine, interrupting my calculated stirring. I tried not to show how annoyed I was with the interruption.

"You haven't slept in two days. Please take a break."

"I can't stop."
