Fall 1895

Sebastian POV


My shiny black shoes turned matte with dust as I kicked rock after rock off the cliff. I peered over the edge, watching each stone tumble down, bounding off the cliffside a few times before splashing into the waves below. There was a bench nearby, but I couldn't force myself to sit still. I was anxiously awaiting my first meeting with the man who would be my mentor, my partner in the field.

Today, I become an Auror.

Was I confused as to why I was meeting him on an unassuming, rural cliffside rather than at the Auror Office at the Ministry where we were both employed?

Perhaps.

If the past two years of training taught me anything, it was that the wisest thing to do was to refrain from asking too many silly questions. I had found it simpler to let the mysterious elder wizards do their mysterious-elder-wizard things. There was a reason for everything, so I had learned to sort of go with it.

I loosened the hand-knit scarf around my neck, which prompted me to assess my attire. I suddenly felt overdressed in my tan suit and black trench coat. Did I look like I was trying too hard?

To make matters worse, it was unseasonably warm. The autumn sun had begun its descent, not yet taking the heat of the day with it. The shadows grew longer and longer as I paced back and forth. I wanted to make a good first impression, but it was set to be a sweaty impression if he continued to keep me waiting.

A piercing caaaaw drew my attention to the clear sky above. I craned my neck and squinted until I spotted a large bird of prey eclipsed against the sun, its wings allowing it to glide effortlessly on the ocean breeze.

It cawed once more before drawing its wings to its body and becoming nothing more than a dark smudge in the sky,

that grew bigger...
