Jack was beginning to accept that sleepless nights were her new normal, though it wasn't nightmares or anxiety which had kept her up this time but rather the little plastic bag that currently sat hidden inside a pair of old socks at the back of her sock drawer which she was trying to muster up the willpower to throw away. She hadn't touched it and she didn't want to throw away 496 days like it was nothing. She'd spent the whole night staring at that number on her phone screen and was fairly sure it was etched into the back of her eyelids by this point.

Pausing on the pavement outside of Spider's house, she sprayed herself with perfume to mask the smell of cigarette smoke from on her walk there before making her way up the driveway to his front door. She lightly rapped her knuckles against the smooth wood before stepping back to wait for him to answer.

They'd arranged to go out that day and she was honestly relieved to be out of the house despite the lack of sleep; keeping busy meant she didn't have as much time to think about the drugs in her sock drawer. Just as she was checking over her appearance in her phone camera Spider answered the door but he didn't look pleased.

"Did I get the wrong time?" She questioned, thinking maybe she'd mixed up their plans in her mind but he shook his head.

"No, uh, just...I'm really sorry."

Her brows furrowed in confusion, "What for?"

"Is that her Spencer?" A woman's voice came from behind him and Jack noticed Spider clenched his jaw at the sound. A moment later an older woman appeared at his side, smiling brightly at her.

Jack's eyes widened slightly as she looked at the woman who was clearly Spider's mum, "Hi," she blinked a few times as she spoke, feeling extremely caught off guard, "I'm Jack."

"Hi Jack, I'm Cait," the woman introduced herself before looking at her son, "For god sake, Spencer, let her inside. Lunch is almost ready."

Spider stepped aside as the woman turned on her heel and retreated down the hallway and Jack stepped inside, looking over at him in extreme confusion, "What's happening? I thought we were going out."

"My mum's hijacking our date." He told her as he closed the door, sounding more than miserable about it, "She wants to meet you."

"No, no, no. Spider, I didn't agree to this." She frantically shook her head, "I get really uncomfortable around parents—on account of the fact I haven't got any. Plus, they always hate me because, well, look at me—" she was cut off when Spider grabbed her face and pressed his lips to hers, shutting her up.
