The house was quiet except for the occasional, soft whimper of Phoenix from the nursery. Marjorie and Reece, despite their deep love for their newborn, were feeling the weight of exhaustion from the relentless demands of caring for a newborn. The nights had been long, filled with feedings, diaper changes, and soothing a baby who seemed to have his own schedule, one that didn't quite align with their need for rest.

Marjorie, with dark circles under her eyes, sat in the living room with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Her hair was pulled back in a loose, messy bun, and she sipped a lukewarm cup of coffee that had long lost its steam. Reece, equally worn out, was pacing gently with Phoenix in his arms, rocking him in a soft rhythm that he hoped would ease the baby back to sleep. His own eyes were red-rimmed, and he tried to muster a tired smile as he looked at Marjorie.

Just then, the doorbell rang, and Carly, who had been a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm, arrived at the house. She had noticed the strain in her parents' voices during their phone calls and decided it was time for her to step in and help. With a sense of purpose, she entered the house, holding a small bag with supplies and a determined look on her face.

"Hi, everyone," Carly called softly as she stepped into the living room. Her presence was like a breath of fresh air, and Reece looked up, relief evident on his face.

"Carly," Marjorie said with a tired smile. "We're so glad you're here."

"I thought you might need a hand," Carly replied. "I've brought some snacks and a few things that might help with Phoenix."

Reece handed Phoenix over to Carly, feeling the weight of the baby shift into her arms. Carly, with practised ease, began to gently rock the baby, her movements confident and soothing. Phoenix, sensing the familiarity of being held, seemed to calm down almost instantly.

Marjorie and Reece exchanged a look of profound relief and gratitude. "Thank you," Marjorie said, her voice carrying the weight of their exhaustion. "We really needed this."

Carly set Phoenix in his crib and began to check on the supplies she had brought. She had included a mix of things: a batch of homemade lactation cookies, some herbal teas known for their calming effects, and a few items for the baby that she thought might be useful. As she worked, she chatted with her parents, her upbeat demeanour a stark contrast to the weariness that had settled over them.

"How about I take over the night shift for a bit?" Carly offered, looking at Reece and Marjorie. "You both look like you could use some sleep."

Reece's face lit up with gratitude. "That would be amazing, Carly. Thank you."

Marjorie nodded, her eyes finally closing for a moment as she leaned back in the chair. "We really appreciate it."

Carly smiled warmly and took charge of Phoenix's care, her confidence and familiarity with baby routines bringing a sense of calm to the household. She expertly handled the feedings and changes, and her patience and gentle touch were a source of comfort for the baby.

As the night wore on, Carly continued to tend to Phoenix, allowing Reece and Marjorie to retreat to their bedroom for much-needed rest. The sound of Carly's soothing voice and Phoenix's gentle coos filled the house, a comforting lullaby that provided a much-needed respite for the exhausted parents.

When Reece and Marjorie awoke a few hours later, they felt more refreshed than they had in days. Carly was still awake, her face showing signs of weariness, but also a deep satisfaction from being able to help.

"You're a lifesaver," Marjorie said, giving Carly a heartfelt hug. "Thank you for everything."

Carly hugged her back, her smile genuine. "It's no problem. I'm happy to help."

As dawn broke, the first light of morning filtered gently through the windows of Reece and Marjorie's home. The house was quiet, save for the soft murmurs of a baby who had finally settled into a peaceful slumber. Reece, who had managed to grab a few hours of sleep thanks to Carly's help, was the first to wake up.

Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Reece made his way to the nursery. The room was bathed in a soft, golden light that casts a warm glow over the space. As he opened the door, he was greeted by an unexpected sight.

There, seated comfortably in the rocking chair, was Carly. She was softly humming a lullaby as she read from a brightly illustrated children's book. Phoenix, swaddled snugly in a blanket, lay peacefully in her arms, his tiny fingers reaching out occasionally as if captivated by the rhythmic cadence of her voice.

Reece stood in the doorway for a moment, taking in the serene scene. Carly's face was illuminated with a tender smile as she continued to read, her voice gentle and soothing. It was clear she had a natural ease with the baby, her movements and tone reflecting a deep affection and care.

Reece quietly approached, careful not to disturb the tranquil moment. "Good morning, Carly," he said softly.

Carly looked up, her eyes bright with warmth and a touch of sleepiness. "Good morning, Dad," she replied, her smile widening. "I thought I'd keep Phoenix company while everyone else slept a bit longer."

Reece nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude and pride. "Thank you. It means a lot to us. He seems to really enjoy your stories."

Carly's smile grew, and she gave a small, contented shrug. "I'm just happy to help. He's such a sweet little guy. I can't wait for him to grow up a bit so I can tell him all the stories and adventures."

Reece stepped closer and gently touched Carly's shoulder, his expression one of deep appreciation. "You're doing an amazing job. We're all so grateful for your support."

Carly's eyes sparkled with a mix of affection and determination. "It's nothing. I'm just glad I can be here for you all. He's a special little baby, and I'm thrilled to be his big sister."

Reece looked down at Phoenix, who was now drifting off to sleep with a peaceful expression. "He's lucky to have you," Reece said softly, his voice filled with emotion.

The two shared a moment of quiet connection, the early morning light casting a gentle glow over them. Reece knew that while the days ahead would still bring challenges, having Carly's support made everything seem a bit more manageable. As he watched Carly continue to read, Reece felt a renewed sense of hope and unity within their family, knowing that they would navigate this journey together with love and strength.
