Kaiya awoke to an oppressive darkness, her senses overwhelmed by the persistent beeping of a machine somewhere nearby. For a fleeting moment, disoriented and groggy, she believed she was lying on the cold, hard floor of an industrial room. A sharp, throbbing pain pulsed through her head, and when she opened her eyes, a blurry vision of a pool of blood greeted her. Panic surged through her—was that blood hers? Was her head bleeding? She hesitantly moved her hand towards the warm, sticky liquid shimmering before her eyes, but before she could process the sensation, everything went blank.
When she came to again, Kaiya was unsure if the image she recalled was a memory or just a vivid nightmare. Her breath came in shallow gasps as she inhaled deeply, the sharp scent of sanitizers filling her nostrils—a sterile, clinical smell she recognized immediately. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized with a start that she was not in her bed at home, but in a hospital.
Eyes wide with shock, she instinctively reached up to touch her head, her fingers trembling as they brushed against the rough texture of a bandage. A surge of fear shot through her, and in her panic, she scrambled to her feet, her movements frantic and uncoordinated. She didn't notice the sharp tug on her right arm until she felt a sudden, stinging pain—the IV line had ripped out as she moved.
Ignoring the discomfort, Kaiya staggered towards the small, dimly lit bathroom at the side of the room, desperate to see her reflection. Her legs wobbled beneath her, and halfway there, a wave of dizziness nearly overwhelmed her. She paused, gripping the doorframe for support, her vision swimming. Through the faint light spilling in from the hallway, she caught a glimpse of herself in the bathroom mirror. Though she was still several steps away, her reflection was clear enough to reveal the full extent of her injuries—her entire head was swathed in bandages, leaving only her eyes visible, and even they were glassy and unfocused.
The beeping from the machines around her grew louder, each pulse resonating with the pounding in her skull. Her dizziness intensified, making it hard to stay upright. She let herself slide down against the wall, struggling to hold onto consciousness when suddenly, the door burst open. A nurse hurried into the room, her expression a mix of surprise and concern.
- "She's awake!" the nurse shouted urgently to someone in the hallway. "Get the doctor!"
Kaiya, still slumped against the wall, looked up at the nurse with wide, frightened eyes. Words failed her as she tried to comprehend what had happened, her mind swirling with confusion and fear.
For a brief moment, everything went dark again. When Kaiya regained consciousness, she found herself back in the hospital bed, her body feeling heavy and disoriented. The overhead lights were now on, casting a harsh glow that made her squint in discomfort. Her head pounded with a dull ache as she struggled to adjust to the brightness. Beside her bed, a doctor stood, scribbling notes on a clipboard with methodical precision, his face a mask of professional focus. A nurse, noticing that Kaiya was awake once more, approached with a gentle smile.
- "W-what happened to me?" Kaiya's voice came out weak and raspy, her throat dry. She blinked rapidly, trying to keep her eyes open despite the light that made them water.
The doctor finally looked up from his clipboard, his expression calm and reassuring.
- "You were in an accident. A friend of yours brought you here," he explained, his tone measured as he continued to assess her condition. He took a small flashlight from his pocket and gently shone it into her eyes, observing her pupils as they reacted to the light. Satisfied, he returned to his notes.
- "Do you know where you are?" he asked, his voice steady.
- "A hospital," Kaiya replied, her mind racing as she tried to piece together fragmented memories of what had happened. But the more she tried to remember, the more elusive the details became.
