After almost a week, Kaiya left the hospital. Her aunt, Mai, welcomed her into her home, providing a temporary haven. The law had intervened, forbidding her father from contacting her again and stripping him of his parental rights. Kaiya felt a mixture of relief and uncertainty as she settled into her new environment.
Before she was released from the hospital, Keisuke visited her once more. As he entered her room, Kaiya's eyes immediately zeroed in on his broken arm, and a look of alarm crossed her face.
- "What happened to you?" she asked, her voice trembling with concern.
Keisuke tried to brush it off, but his usual bravado was tinged with a hint of frustration.
- "Some guys from the Killer Bee gang came to school and wanted to fight me. Chifuyu and Ryusei protected me, but I ended up with this," he explained, gesturing to his cast.
- "Those motherfuckers! How did they know you're not allowed to fight at school?" Kaiya's anger flared, her eyes narrowing as she tried to piece together the puzzle.
Keisuke sighed, running his good hand through his messy hair.
- "I'm not quite sure yet...but their leader mentioned something about destroying Toman and me in order to become a Yotsuya Kaidan executive."
Kaiya's eyes widened in realization.
- "That's Ryusei's old gang," she said, her concern deepening. The thought of Ryusei's past coming back to haunt them was unsettling.
She looked better; her nose had started to heal, and the bruises on her face were fading, revealing her usual soft features. Her fever was gone, and she seemed more at ease, but the weight of the recent events still hung heavy in the air.
She took Keisuke's hand, her grip firm.
- "Did you speak with Ryusei?" she asked, already suspecting he hadn't.
- "I was hoping that his Kaiya would be more successful in doing that. I know that Ryu-Ryu visited you," Keisuke smirked playfully, trying to lighten the mood.
Kaiya's face turned red. Ryusei had visited her a few times, always bringing gifts. At some point, she had pet-called him "Ryu-Ryu," but she didn't expect Ryusei to tell Keisuke about it.
- "Ryu-Ryu, huh?" Keisuke teased, enjoying her embarrassment.
- "Shut up, Keisuke," she mumbled, trying to hide her blush. "But seriously, we should talk to him. This isn't just about you and I. It's about all of Toman."
Keisuke's teasing demeanor shifted, his expression turning serious and he nodded.
Kaiya squeezed his hand, her yellow eyes locking onto his.
- "Good. Because we can't let them tear us apart. We need to stay strong, together."
- "I know," Keisuke said, looking into her eyes. "And I won't let anything happen to you again, Kaiya. You're too important to me."
Kaiya's breath caught in her throat. She was almost shocked to hear Keisuke say something so heartfelt.
- "I'm... important to you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Her eyes widened, and for a moment, she was at a loss for words. The weight of his statement settled over her, wrapping around her like a warm blanket on a cold night. She felt her heart skip a beat, then pound faster as the meaning of his words sank in.
Kaiya's cheeks flushed a deep pink, contrasting sharply with the fading bruises on her face. Her yellow eyes sparkled with a mixture of surprise and something deeper, something she hadn't allowed herself to acknowledge until now. She looked down at their joined hands, feeling the warmth of his touch seep into her skin, grounding her.
